NEWPORT NEWS - Charles Albert Braslow, M.D. was born on February 5, 1948 and passed away on August 28, 2015 in Newport News, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert L. and Myrtle Shoaf Braslow. He is survived by his loving partner of 37 years, Robert McDaniel. Charles was a 1965 graduate of Newport News High School and went on to attend The Johns Hopkins University and Medical schools. He completed five years of general surgery residencies and 2 years of plastic surgery residencies at Boston University. He lived in New York City for twenty years practicing surgery and working in hospital administration with the Montefiore Medical Center and teaching at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His appreciation and enjoyment of the arts, opera and theatre were fulfilled by all of New York has to offer and by annual visits to Italy. In 2000, Charles and Bob took the opportunity to move to St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. Charles opened a general medicine practice continuing his dedication to affording all people qualified medical care, a belief he fought for all of his years in medicine. Soon after arriving in St. Croix, Charles became involved with the Caribbean Community Theatre. In high school, Charles had been a thespian, acting in plays for which he received considerable distinction. Forty years later, he was again able to fulfill his passion for theater, not just by observing, but by participating as an actor and then a director. Charles is survived by his sister, Barbara Deyong; nephew, Adam Deyong and wife, Marissa; niece, Samantha Chou and husband Jimmy; three great nephews and one great niece, Dylan and Paxton Chou, Jonah and Anna Deyong. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 30 at Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula. Arrangements are in the care of Peninsula Funeral Home. I was a friend and roommate of Charlie's in Boston back in 1975. I just googled his name today and was sad to find out he had died several years ago. Charlie lent me money to cover tuition to go to a computer technical school. It was not a small sum either. He never rushed me to pay him back, simply saying, "I knew you would". What a kind and caring person he was.

I am so sorry to learn of Charlie's death, especially at this late date. I had known him since he was a resident at BU in the 70s. He was a dear friend, and I know he is missed terribly.

I am full of sorrow. I've just now heard that Charles has died but am inclined to think that he hasn't, except in small part.

A good friend, an excellent man. A sense of humor that tended to hide itself from all but a few, which is a mercy for the many, because, fuelled by that rare combination of intelligence and sense of the absurd, it was incisive. Sometimes lethally so. But he never let his works of wit fall upon the susceptible. He was too good-hearted for that.

Bob, I have long hoped we'd meet. Maybe we shall still. My deep condolences and fond regards,

Paul Traywick (

I apologize for the lateness of this message, but I only caught up with the sad news today (October 4). Nevertheless, I couldn't let Charles' passing go unremarked, because he was a significant player in my NNHS experience, as we were in the same home room. His wicked, intelligent and often irreverent sense of humor was a delight. I may have my memories mixed up but if he didn't initiate it, he was a major player in the creation of the "Rowena the raw weiner" cartoons (including the sauerkraut wedding dress) after we read Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe in English class. I've thought of him fondly over the decades and will remember him fondly for a long time into the future.

I am so privileged to have known Charlie; to have acted under his direction 4 times; to have directed him twice; and to have called him friend. He made me reach higher artistically, and I so admired his own desire to learn and grow. He was smart, he was funny, he was genuine. He was my husband's physician and the reason Tim became comfortable with going to a doctor. I have missed him since he left St. Croix and am so sad to hear of his passing. Our deepest condolences to Bob and Barbara and everyone else who mourns his loss.

I consider myself so fortunate to have made Chuck's acquaintance in STX, Virgin Islands...I thank him for providing quality medical care, friendship, and entertainment in the small community he and Bob chose to work, live, and play in. It was a sad day when he closed his practice but also a joyful one as he and Bob were then free to pursue the many interests they had, for so long, postponed for work and other obligations. To you Bob, my most heartfelt condolences and to the family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I celebrate his life with you...his sincerity, his kindness, and his generosity...truly an inspiration to look up to.
