HAMPTON - Eunice Virginia Fetters Odell Newsome, "Memaw," went to her reward after 98 fulfilling years, on Friday, Apr. 20, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Dec. 28, 1913, in Onancock, Va., to the late Thomas and Bernice Fetters.
The family moved from the Eastern Shore to Newport News, Va., and Eunice graduated from Newport News High School in 1929. In 1931, she married the late Otis E. Odell Sr., and became a federal employee working in the personnel office at Fort Monroe. She then went on to become the personnel manager at the Kecoughtan VA Hospital in Hampton, Va., a position she held until retirement. She was a member of Phoebus Baptist Church at the time.
In 1967, Eunice married the late Walter J. Newsome and later relocated to Mathews, Va., where she and "Poppa Walt" spent 20 wonderful years together. She was an active member of Mathews Baptist Church, during this time, where she used her wonderful gift of song to support the choir and taught Sunday school classes. In 1988, Eunice moved back to Hampton, Va., and attended Restoration Church Phoebus Baptist.
Eunice, or "Memaw" as she was lovingly known by her family, will be greatly missed. Her affinity and zeal for life, sense of humor, smile and laugh, and unconditional love, along with her inspirational and unshakeable faith in God, will always be remembered by those who knew her. Her family and her faith were the cornerstones of her life. Visits to Memaw's house meant laughter, singing, good food, family togetherness and maybe a spirited game of dice or two, or three (it depended on whether the girls or boys were winning). She possessed a truly exceptional soul-and could turn away any care or trouble with a word and a hug.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Eunice was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Hellman and Bernice Ann Fetters; two brothers, Andy and Tommy Fetters; and a son, Otis E. Odell Jr.
She leaves behind to celebrate her life and cherish her memory two sisters, Effie Wilder and Peggy Alsing; three children, Jerry L. O'Dell (Dot), Joyce A. Rule (Bob), and Judith W. Ball and her husband, Bobby, Gayle Newsome and Maxine Newsome; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
A viewing will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Va. Interment and the graveside service will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at H.C. Smithers Cemetery, Hudgins, Va., presided by Pastor Ed Inabinet. A celebration of Eunice's life will be conducted by Pastor Thom Schutt at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Restoration Church Phoebus Baptist, 508 Fox Hill Road, Hampton, Va. A reception will immediately follow services.
