NEWPORT NEWS - Helen Krause Hogan, 78, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News.
Born June 12, 1932, she was a graduate of Newport News High School and longtime resident of Newport News. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Fort Eustis Consignment Shop where she had many friends.
She was the best mother a daughter could want, teaching hers to be strong, independent and hard working.
Her family came first, but she was always ready to travel, going on trips to Europe and Hawaii with best friend Maggie Tucker of York County and on Caribbean cruises with her husband.
She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Linda Sue Hogan Haley, brother, James Ruskey of North Carolina and parents.
She will be lovingly missed by her husband of 63 years, William Randolph Hogan; daughters, Jean Hogan of Newport News, Elizabeth Hogan Beaver of Braselton, Ga., and husband Ed, and Kathy Hogan Van Mullekom of York County and husband, Ken; brothers, William Ruskey and wife, Jan of Newport News and Rudy and wife, Gloria Ruskey of Tennessee; and sister, Jeanette and husband, Merle Weeks of Michigan. She is also loved by six grandsons, Morgan Hanks and wife, Dawn of Newport News, Lance and Jon Ayers of Richmond, Philip Haley of Gloucester, Jeffrey Wells of Hampton and Brian Wells and fiancEe, Marcella of Charlotte, N.C.
The family thanks Dr. John Mattern of Virginia Oncology and Associates for his compassionate care throughout mom's illness.
The family will receive friends 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 13, at W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.
