NEWPORT NEWS - Horace E. "Sonny" Elvington, 74, passed away on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013 at James River Convalescent Center after a long illness. He was born in Mullins, S.C. and had been a resident of Newport News for most of his life. Sonny was a 1957 graduate of Newport News High School and retired from Norshipco as a burner after 30 years of service. He loved the Redskins, Jeff Gordon, TV, movies, and was of the Baptist Faith. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Horace B. and Winnie Ruth Elvington. Survivors include his three children, Lori Cormier, Ed Cormier, and Glenn Elvington; he also raised four girls as his own. He is also survived by his brother, Terry Elvington; four grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; one niece, Sherry Thacker who was like a daughter to him; and one nephew, David Elvington. The family will receive friends on Wed., Jan. 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10 in Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to Relay For Life "Blues Traveler's" of Hampton Family Practice.
