NEWPORT NEWS - Jean Dawson Harrell Wood, age 88, passed away on August 7, 2015. She was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, the daughter of Samuel and Beulah Harrell. She moved to Newport News in 1935 and after graduating from Newport News High School in 1944, she married the love of her life, Charles Henry Wood Jr. Survivors include sister, Peggy Weeks of Kannapolis, North Carolina and Ted and Mabel Safford of Leesburg, Florida. She leaves four children, Charles Henry Wood III, Jean Elizabeth Wood Gardner, Deborah Ann Wood Pia, and David Morgan Wood. When diagnosed with Diabetic Neuropathy 12 years ago, Jean Dawson never gave up. She never complained, maintaining a brave and cheerful outlook with life. Filled with compassion and a keen interest in others, Jean made friends easily and maintained contact with many. As her children grew, she began working outside the home and maintained two jobs to further her kid's education. Jean was an avid reader and a tenacious bridge player. She was also sort of a self-proclaimed NASA Propagandist having worked in contract files during the Apollo Moon Mission from which she retired in 1977. After Charlie passed away, she travelled the world with beloved friends she had known since high school, to the Pyramids in Egypt, walking the Great Wall in China, Stonehenge, swimming on the Great Barrier Reef, and many more destinations. Her family would like to thank and honor the management and nursing staff of The Newport for years of tender care they have given our mother. Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Susan G. Komen, Attn: Donor Relationships & Services, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, Texas 75265-0309. Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Va. 23601.

Skip, Betty, Debbie, and David,
I am very sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. I know it has been very difficult over the past 12 years, but I hope you can take comfort that she is now in a better place. I will remember her not as the across the hall neighbor of my father at the nursing home, but as the Energizer Bunny with the infectious laugh who lived next door. Again, my sincere condolences.

Jean was a dear friend of my mother's, Jean Smith, and I have very fond memories of their joy in living life to its fullest! She was known as "TuTu" to my three sons when they were very little and we still lived in NN. I was out of town at the time and am late catching up on reading the papers. My best to you all and know your mother touched many lives in a very special way!

Dear Skip, Betty, Debbie and David,

I was saddened to learn of my "Aunt Jean's" passing, but I am delighted that she will once again be reunited with "Uncle Charlie." Jean was such a vibrant, caring person and I will always treasure my special times with her. I regret that I am unable to attend the service tomorrow, as I would have liked to honor Jean and to catch up with each of you. May fond memories of your beautiful mother comfort you during this difficult time. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Wood worked hard and followed the rules her whole life. She reaped the rewards in a loving, wonderful and successful family, an exciting retirement, and a long life, which even in her later years was often a happy one. She was truly an inspiration and I will miss her.

Dear Wood Family,
You are in our prayers and thoughts. May God give you peace in your time of loss.
Mom and I visited and Prayed with Jean many times at the Newport. She will be missed by those who knew her. She was a inactive member of our Sunday School Class of North Riverside Baptist Church.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4 God bless each of you. Grace & Peace
