POQUOSON - Jewelle Dolores Rollins Slagle passed away Friday, June 2, 2017 with her family by her side. Jewelle led an extraordinary and fascinating life. She was a proud, loving and present mother, a student of naturopathy and holism, working at various health and wellness stores on the Peninsula and Norfolk and, an unending source of knowledge, having read tens of thousands of books during her lifetime. She was one of the first group of women to be part of the WAF (Women's Air Force) and walked proudly in Harry Truman's Inaugural parade in her heels and stockings on the coldest day in 30 years. Jewelle was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a past president the Woman's Sunday School Class. She volunteered and supported many charitable organizations focusing on children and animal welfare and care. Jewelle was predeceased by her parents, Olin and Hattie Terry; and her husband of 40 years, Ray Campbell Slagle. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Slagle Kessler and beloved son-in-law, Dr. John Kessler ; step-son Randy Slagle and wife Christie of Killeen, TX with granddaughters, Lauren and Robyn. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Sentara Careplex in Hampton for their extraordinary care and compassion, with special thanks to Lauren, Brittany, Mirae, Sarah, both Barbaras, and Drs. La Falce, Powell and Chang, and so many others. A Celebration of Jewelle's life and visitation will be held Tuesday, June 6 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home in Poquoson. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to The Gentle Barn, 15825 Sierra Hwy, Santa Clarita, CA 91390, or any local animal care foundation. Online condolences to claytorrollins.com .

Sincere Sympathy. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with her family. She welcomed us with open arms, very sweet and kind when we moved in to be their new next door neighbors. We have missed her and will always remember her love of reading, curled up in her comfy chair and ottoman enjoying the many books she read. Her smile was like sunshine.

Mrs Slagle was my neighbor growing up and I couldn't have asked for a better "other mother". I was always welcomed and loved in her home. Her lovely smile would always light up a room . My heart goes out to Lynn and her family .

Prayers to you and your family in your loss. Mrs. Slagle used to cine to the Northampton Branch Library many years ago when I worked there. She love her mystery books especially cat ones. She was one of our favorites to talk to. Shes at piece now. I was the brunette at the front desk that worked with Virginia Debbie and Charles Prayers.
