HAMPTON - John Gary Ilish, 77, departed this life April 20, 2008. He fought a courageous battle against asbestosis. Johnny's interests and hobbies included golf, his garden, and the Atlanta Braves baseball team. He retired from Newport News Waterworks.
He is survived by three sisters, Catherine Weaver, Bertha Buras, and Shirley Williamson; one brother, Nick (Peanut) Ilish and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mill Swamp Cemetery in Ivor, Va., with the Rev. George T. Insley officiating.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I knew John for only about a year from meeting him at Colonial Downs in Hampton. We used to talk about sports a lot. I thought the world of him. He was a very interesting and great person.
