HAMPTON - Mayme Catherine Leggette, age 92, went to be with the Lord on January 8, 2014. She was affectionately known as 'Tootsie'. She was born in Newport News to George Walton Nash and Marion Scott Barker on March 28, 1921. She had been a Hampton resident since 1955. Catherine was a graduate of the Newport News High School class of 1939 enjoying cheerleading and singing in the school chorus. She was a volunteer at the James River Convalescent Center, Newport News for seventeen years. She worked in transportation at Riverside Hospital, Newport News for two years. As a young person Catherine attended Tabernacle Baptist church in Newport News. As a young adult she attended Gospel Tabernacle on 32nd Street, Newport News. She was a founding member of Bethel Temple Assembly of God in Hampton. She is preceded in death by Vance Monroe Gaines and Johnnie Wesley Leggette. Her marriage to Vance Monroe Gaines on July 19, 1942 produced two daughters. Johnnie Wesley Leggette and Catherine married on October 21, 1948 and produced three sons and one daughter. She is survived by Catherine Gaines Ellis and her husband Don; Cynthia Gaines Weck and her spouse Fred; Johnnie Wesley Leggette, Jr. and his wife Mim; Dennis Kendall Leggette and his wife Kathy; Robert Craig Leggette and Cheryl Leggette Manning. Catherine was blessed with nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. She was also blessed with caring neighbors of more than fifty years, Bill and Shirley Dancy. Compassionate caregivers were Patricia Michael, Caroline Setchel, and Vivian Mancini. She is survived by a sister and a brother, Marion Delores King and Carlin Walton Nash. Rev. Charles E. Hollifield and Carlin W. Nash will preside over the services at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue in Hampton on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 1:00 pm followed by graveside attendance at Parklawn Memorial Park. Mayme Catherine remembered her Creator in the days of her youth and honored her Lord throughout her life. Ecclesiastes 12:1

Will always remember the good times that were had at Miss Tootsie's. Sister Leggette was always there for us even when she did not approve of what we were up too. Sorry for your loss but know that she is with her Lord and Savior. My prayers are with the family
