NEWPORT NEWS - Merle Hilton Cobb, only son of Raleigh and Millie, left this world December 11, 2016 to be with them in the next. Born in 1938, he was a lifelong Peninsula resident. He was a proud Typhoon where he drummed in the marching band for five years. He retired after forty-one years at the Newport News Shipyard. He is survived by his wife, Joan of fifty-five years; his three children, Catherine, Robin, and Matthew; along with six granddaughters and two great-granddaughters. The family will hold a small graveside service. The family asks that expressions of sympathy be made in his name to your favorite cause in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are in the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.

MY SYMPATHY IS WITH THE FAMILY. I WORKED WITH MERLE SEVERAL YEARS.HE WAS ALWAYS READY TO HELP EVEN IF HE COULDN'T HE WOULD FIND OUT WHO COULD.HE WAS A QUIET MAN, NEVER BOASTING ABOUT HIMSELF.BUT MYSELF AND MANY OTHERS SOON FOUND OUT THAT IF WE WANTED SOMETHING DONE IN A HURRY HE WAS THE MAN TO CALL.
I CONSIDERED HIM A GREAT ASSET TO THE GROUP HE WORKED WITH. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILY.

I will miss Merle greatly. He was a wonderful brother in law to me and my husband John. Merle has been a part of my life since my early teenage years. He was a valued member of our family and I am honored to have been able to have him as an integral part of my life.

With Love,
Pat
