NEWPORT NEWS - Pete Nicholas Markos passed away on Monday, May 18, 2015, surrounded by his family and close friends. He was born on July 24, 1930 in Newport News, Virginia to the late Nick and Zoe Markos. From an early age he loved sports especially basketball. He played basketball and football for "The Hurricanes" going on to play for Newport News High School, where he was on the track team and captain of his varsity basketball team, earning the nickname "Pistol Pete." In addition, he was chairman of the Honor Council and elected king of his class. He attended William and Mary on a full athletic scholarship to play basketball, graduating in 1953 with a BA degree. After serving his country in the U.S. Army, Pete began his career with the General Adjustment Bureau as an insurance adjuster, becoming branch manager and later starting his own insurance business, Pete N Markos, Inc. until his retirement. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Athena Tsitsera Markos, his daughter Zoe Lumpkin and son-in-law Greg, his grandson Chris Theoharis, and wife Sarah, and granddaughter Athena Theoharis and partner Kyle. He is also survived by his two brothers, George and Mickey Markos and three sisters-in-law, Olympia Plethos, Voula Thanos and Helen Adams as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Pete was a wonderful, loving husband, father and grandfather and was known in the community as a man of integrity and honor. He and his wife Athena stayed close with Pete's William and Mary basketball teammates and their wives throughout the years, meeting for annual reunion weekends at their homes, frequent luncheons, and remaining lifelong friends. Pete will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him. The family would like to express gratitude to all those family and friends who have helped us over the past few years. We also would like to express special thanks to his caregiver, Jane, whose care was a blessing. On Thursday evening, May 21, 2015 a Trisagion Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 pm at the Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 60 Traverse Road, Newport News, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 22 at 11:00 am at the church officiated by Rev. George Chioros. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to The Alzheimer's Association, 6350 Center Ave., Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502 or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are in the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.

I was so sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Mr. Markos when my sister visited us for my son's high school graduation. As a well respected childhood neighbor, I knew of his quiet strength and kindness which has been bestowed to his daughter, Zoe as well. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Kathy

To the Markos family; I knew Pete while working in the insurance field for close to 50 years. He was kind, well respected and considered one of the best insurance adjusters we had in the area. It was a privilege knowing him.
Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

To the Markos Family,

Pete was a mentor, Father and Grandfather to me all in one package! He allowed me to take the reins of the company and grow. All of your family's support was very special and important to me. It really helped secure our future. Pete really taught me how to be reflective, gentlemanly & professional, all at the same time.He was well respected and very well thought of in our industry. All of the Burke's will remember him fondly. He will be missed greatly. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you! All of our love, Bill, Carol & Connor Burke
