NEWPORT NEWS - Robert B. 'Bobby' Hancock Jr., 86, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, in his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Newport News and a graduate of Newport News High School. Bobby attended Va. Tech., and was a lifelong fan, and of course, a Redskins fan. He also graduated from the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School and had worked for the Newport News Shipyard, as a Senior Designer, retiring after 40 years of service. Bobby was a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon and elder. He had also been a member of the Newport News Exchange Club, and the Warwick Yacht Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed boating, camping and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R. Berkley and Elizabeth Hancock.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Doris S. Hancock; daughter, Robin H. Bateman and her husband, Rick; son, Berk Hancock, all of Newport News; grandchildren, Christopher Hancock and his wife, Heather, Lindsey B. Nichol and her husband, Kevin, and Jason Hancock. Bobby is also survived by his beloved dog, Holly; and he loved his many cousins, nieces, nephews, and he adored his great-niece. His greatest love was his family, who he was so very proud of.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Michelle Solomon and Heartland Hospice, for their compassionate care to Bobby.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at Peninsula Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 3:30 p.m., at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church.

Doris we are so sorry to hear that Bobby has passed.... We will always remember the good times we shared with him at the river. He was so excited when he got his new camper and truck.... How he loved to dance...And he had to have his satelite so he could watch the Hokies or Redskins on Tv... He will be missed by many... Our hearts and prayers are with you and Berk during this time...

Bobby's passing has left us all a little poorer, but my memories of him will always bring a smile when I think of his sweet nature and the friendly encounters we had from the time of our childhoods until recently. Our chance meetings always brought a hearty greeting and a hug and lifted my spirits, no matter what else was happening. He was truly a good and gentle man who will be missed by so many. Doris, I wish you and the family peace and my deepest condolences at this sad time.
