YORKTOWN - Sherman L. "Skip" Skillman, age 76, of Yorktown, passed away unexpectedly March 15, 2012.
His survivors include his wife of 55 years, Martha; two daughters, Regina Howell (Dale) of Yorktown and Pamela Skillman (Jonathan Sturges) of Vienna; grandson, Logan; brothers, Jon (Pat) and David (Susan) of California, and many extended family members he loved.
Skip loved being involved with bombers and jets during his 21 years in the Air Force. He served nine years enlisted before attending Officer Candidate School, and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He completed his service as Commander of the 474th Avionics Squadron at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas. He had previously served at Langely AFB and returned to this area after retirement.
Skip's adventurous spirit directed him to take up skiing, at age 68, so he could accompany his grandson on the slopes. He enjoyed volunteering for various civic and military organizations and will be remembered by many for his quirky humor and appreciation for life. He loved gatherings with family and friends and most of all, great food.
A dedicated serviceman, husband, family man and adored Pop-Pop, Skip, will be deeply missed. At his request, no service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, he would've asked that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the American Heart Association. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Regina and Pam, I am so sorry to hear that your dad has passed. I remember his kind and fun loving spirit when I was working and attending Christopher Newport. I had the pleasure of working with him on a few of the events at the college and he was always straightforward and fair. My heart felt sympathy goes out to you and your families. Rusty

Skip was my first Air Force "boss" and shared his love of country, family and service. He & Martha led us through those early years with encouragement and support. A great leader, friend and family man, we will always remember Skip.

Skip, you were a model of integrity while we were blessed by your presence. Now it is your privilege to cast off the surly bonds of earth and put out your hand to God.

My condolances to Martha and Family. Skip & I were roomates at OCS. Martha and the girls lived next door to my wife and kids while we were in training at Lackland. Skip was one of the people that I most admired at OCS. He has been in my thoughts for the past 40 years. He will cheerfully help them "get it right" in Heaven. I miss you, Skip.
