I just heard the sad news today of Bill's passing. My condolences to Betty and everyone who was close to Bill. He and I got to be good friends through his love of the Iverson Movie Ranch in Chatsworth, Calif., and other old filming locations. We were separated by a continent, but we corresponded regularly during the almost 10 years we knew each other, and we got together whenever he made his treks out to California to visit the old movie ranches. He was extremely supportive when I was just a "new guy" learning about the shooting locations, and he continuously came up with interesting mysteries and good research over the years. I think Bill was the first person who told me I had a knack for identifying the rocky locations seen in the Westerns, and it was with his encouragement along with that of a few other "old pros" that I pursued my passion and eventually became more knowledgeable. I have a number of Bill's DVDs about the Iverson Ranch and other locations, and they have been one of the foundations of my own location research, contributing to my growth as a film historian. I believe Bill was responsible for, among other things, naming some of the major rock features on the Iverson Ranch. He kept up his support for my work by following my Iverson Movie Ranch Blog, contributing key facts as needed and coming up with interesting research threads. Bill was always really happy when he was able to visit the Iverson Ranch, and he helped share the joy by regularly bringing contingents of eager location enthusiasts on expeditions from the East Coast. I am posting a photo of Bill on the Iverson Movie Ranch that I took when he came out in 2009, taken at the ranch's old camera mount, with Nyoka Cliff (on the left) and Stoney Point (on the right) in the background. I will miss Bill, as will a lot of us out here in California.
