Joseph Murphy Lavergne
Lewisburg - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Joseph Murphy Lavergne at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 7, 2014, in the St. John's Chapel in Lewisburg, LA. The Very Reverend Monsignor Jefferson J. DeBlanc, Jr., V.E. will Celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will be held at the Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas, LA.
Mr. Lavergne, age 84, a resident of Lewisburg, LA, died on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Opelousas General Health System.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather devoted to his family and God. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. John's Chapel. He devoted many hours of his time by serving as a church usher and as a volunteer in the church community. He was the former head usher at St. John's Chapel. Mr. Lavergne was given the Monsignor Clay A. Bienvenu Award in 2007 for meritorious service.
Mr. Lavergne will be remembered as someone who was always willing and ready to help in whatever way he could, whenever a need arose. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
Survivors are his daughters, Peggy Lavergne Hansen and husband, Gary, of Perry, Utah and Laura Lavergne Milligan of Opelousas, LA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Ryan Milligan and wife, Gretchen; Claire Milligan; Jeremy Hansen and wife, Marie; Philip Hansen; Daniel Hansen and wife, Shannon; Sarah Hansen Frey and husband, Reagan and three great-grandchildren, Molly Milligan, Myles Milligan and Braden Milligan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Ruth Chachere Lavergne; parents, Nara Lavergne and Mary Eva Tweedel Edwards and his special Aunt Elvie "Nan" Lavergne Meche and Uncle Albert "Pie" Meche.
Visitation will be held at the LaFond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Sunday, April 6, 2014, from 1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and will reopen on Monday from 8:00 a.m. until service time. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday.

I will keep Mr. Murphy and your family in my prayers. There will never be another like him. He was a great mentor to all us that grew up in and around Bug.
