Dr Shafer was blessed into our lives in 1957 when I was Born at
St Elizabeth Hospital under the care of Dr Chaplin and Dr Randell , I was born with my internal organs on the outside of my body, and wasn't expected to make it. But did, I meet Dr Shafer after that and had Beckwith -Weidemann Syndrome and if remember right was one of his first patience out of 9. He also operated on me up to when I was 25 years old..He was God's gift to my family and to me,he is one of the reasons I am here today.
God Bless you in Heaven ,

When we arrived in Dayton in 1965 for our internship, we were accompanied by two young children, the youngest being six months old. He was born with the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, a relatively recently recognized entity. As a Christian I was interested in the Christian Medical Society meeting. Prior to our first meeting we saw in the local paper a notice that a local pediatric surgeon was to present a paper in Chicago on seven cases of the B-W syndrome on whom he had performed a procedure that he devised...to reduce the size of the macroglossia that accompanied the syndrome. We met Dr. Shafer at the meeting and he immediately was interested in seeing another case. The rest is history. He did the tongue surgery that provided our boy with a functional tongue that has served him well all these years (53 years). In addition he performed several additional surgeries on our boy. At that time he was operating at the new Kettering Hospital until Children's was completed. We firmly believe our decision to come to Dayton was for this purpose, to meet Dr. Shafer and to be blessed by his medical ministry. To God be the glory great things He has done and continues to do.

Thank you family for sharing your amazing husband, father and more.

So sorry to hear of Dr Shaffer's passing. He was a fine physician and man. Knew his sister and brother in law Pat and Jack O'Hara well.
