Alicia Stein Obituary

Alicia Flaherty Stein

Alicia Flaherty Stein died in her home on Saturday June 8, 2013 with her family by her side. Some believe she died of Disco Fever, however her battle with cancer for over four years was more likely the actual cause. She never complained and never questioned her disease, but instead lived and loved her life, family and friends. She was married three times to her best friend Jim and had three biological children and many unofficial children including nephews, nieces and friends.

Alicia was born on June 26, 1947 in New Castle, Pennsylvania to Edward and Mary Jayne Flaherty whom she claimed were both circus performers, but it's highly suspect. She met Jim Stein of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware when she was 14 while attending the auctions at Stuart Kingston on the boardwalk. They were secretly married at the county courthouse in Rockville, Maryland six years later. They were married a second time in front of their families five years after that and then renewed their vows in 2010. Third time's a charm.

Alicia wasn't a fan of cooking, but made a mean reservation. If she could, she would offer her condolences to the soon-to-be unemployed caterers she can no longer hire. She enjoyed a great practical joke and loved the element of surprise.

She was most at peace looking at the ocean with her toes in the sand and loved good conversations with friends about anything, from the profoundly prophetic to the sublimely irrelevant. She had an uncanny ability to connect with strangers, usually insisting that she knew their parents, and spending five minutes with Alicia was like finding a lifelong friend. She always put the comfort and well-being of others before her own. She was the shoulder to cry on, the ear that could listen and the voice that, more often than not, knew exactly what to say. There was no bigger heart than Alicia's. She was incredibly loyal and fiercely protective. She was a person who could easily forgive, but never forget. Her greatest joy was to laugh and her family and friends would do their best to try and bring a smile to her face. She had eyes of the bluest skies long before Axl Rose made it popular and was a master winker. Her beauty was unmatched, her smile was radiant and she will be forever missed.

She leaves behind her husband Jim, sons Edward (Kristin) and Jaimie (Shanna), daughter Courtney, nephew P.J. Flaherty (Kristine), nieces Alex Walsh (David) and Jacquelyn Penters (Scott), her sister Lyn and niece Lara and grandchildren Alexis and P.J. Flaherty, Isabelle and Sophie Penters, Drake, Sam and Evangeline Walsh, and one on the way, her consiglieri Francina Johnson and right-hand woman Corine Williams.

A celebration of her life will be held at Greenville Country Club, 201 Owls Nest Road, Wilmington, DE at 1:00 pm on Thursday, June 13th for anyone who wishes to attend.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Delaware Hospice at 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810 or Dr. Andrew Cameron's Laboratory Research Fund at Johns Hopkins Medicine. In the memo line of the check, please reference Alicia Stein. Checks should be made payable to Johns Hopkins University and mailed to Attn: Michelle Golberg, Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, 100 North Charles Street, Suite 422-A, Baltimore, Maryland 21201.

Not sure what to say?

Dear all: I just learned of Alicia's passing last night from friends in New Castle. She was a radiant, thoughtful, and extremely talented woman I had the pleasure of directing her in several shows at Westminster College and my late husband Lou Lager, had her in several classes. We all spent happy times at her home in just visiting, and for cast parties. Her sisters, Mom and Dad were a delight to know. My daughter had also played with Lyn's daughter
when they visited Mary Jane. I have many fond memories of Alicia, always open, honest, and joyful. The beautiful qualities her life expressed live on, and and will continue to touch those who knew her.

With love,
Eileen Hendrickson (Lager)

Aunt Alicia, you were an inspiration to us all. Knowing that this will be the first full year without you in my life, and my family's lives, is just something I never wanted to experience. Words cannot express the impact you had on my life. You helped shape the person I am now, and the man I will become, and I thank you for that. I love you with all my heart.

I still miss you so much & the wound feels so raw. I've needed to talk to you practically every day since you left us & I just hate it. I can't imagine Thanksgiving without you. I can't imagine the Beach without you. I miss your laugh, your sarcasm, your wit, your kindness, your empathy, but most of all, I miss your love. I wish I could wave a magic wand & make you come back home healthy & happy. But wishes, as we know, are for children. This child loves you & misses you more than words can say.

I am so sad to hear about the lose of Alicia. I was a childhood friend and have tried to find her without success until now. My name is Rosemary Brice Eastman. She has been in my thoughts for the last couple of years. I did not know she was sick. She was a very special person and loved to have a good time even when we were very young. We had no problem getting into (innocent) trouble. She was a natural beauty..we spent many times at the farm where her Father would scare us as we slept on the porch..she gave him several gray hairs!! I am sorry we did not stay in touch. I will keep her, you Jim and her family in my prayers.

I played the Tin-Man and Alicia was the Scarecrow in the Westminster College Production of The Wizard of Oz. I hadn't thought about her in many years and her face popped into my head last week. I was compelled to google her today and learned of her passing. We never dated but we had adventures. One day we posed as a wealthy couple and took a Pantera for a test drive, returning to the dealership 5 hours later! What fun! What a strong spirit and delight she was. She promised to take me to the circus one day to met her parents. Deepest sympathies.

I will remember her first day at Neshannock High School. I was asked to meet her at the back early, before the school buses arrived. I thought it was a strange request and maybe there was something wrong with her. She just didn't want anyone to see she had a chauffeur. Alicia wanted to blend in with everyone. She had a heart of gold, funny and I am sure those who crossed her path in the future also grew to love her. We had fun with many sleep overs and had to laugh when we had to do dishes at her house, too. Lin you were lucky, when I was there. I so regret not getting in touch with her over the years. We all need to remember to make time for those friends before it is too late. Alicia, every time I see a yellow butterfly I will think of you.
Prayers to your family,
