Marilyn Talman
AGE: 69 • Wilmington, DE
Marilyn Talman, 69, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at home, with her spouse and best friend by her side. She died June 5, 2016, after a short, intense fight against ovarian cancer.
Marilyn was born in Belle Vernon, PA to Simon and Elizabeth Talman. She earned a BS in Mathematics, worked as an IT tech for 20 years, and graduated cum laude from Temple School of Law. Most of her career was spent at Wilmington Trust, where she was Vice President and Senior Counsel.
She earned her Certificate in Financial Planning, and a Master's of Finance at UD. She was teaching graduate level finance as an adjunct professor when she became ill. She was also a volunteer tax preparer for AARP for 10 years, because "doing taxes is fun!"
Marilyn loved John Deere tractors; her dream retirement job was to mow the median strip on I-95 from Maine to Florida. She liked baseball and UD Women's basketball games, gardening and cooking. Dogs and cats were her constant companions. Marilyn liked being in control, she was incredibly brilliant, often obstinate, always humble, kind and generous. Whatever she did, she did well. Marilyn had a keen sense of loyalty and doing the right thing, per Gibbs' Rules.
Marilyn is survived by her spouse of 20 years, Kathleen Buckalew, and her best friend of 40 years, Shirleyan Smoker. She is survived by the entire Buckalew family, her brothers, Louis (Jean) and Jeffrey, and niece Anna Rapp.
A memorial service is being planned. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Marilyn Talman Scholarship at UD. Please send contributions to: University of Delaware, Gifts Processing, 83 E. Main St., Newark, DE 19716. Make checks payable to 'University of Delaware' and include on the memo line "in memory of Ms. Marilyn Talman". Or go to UD's secure website, www.udel.edu/makeagift or call 302-831-2104.

Kathy, I was so sad to receive your email about Marilyn's death. What a very sad time for you. I send all my sympathy. She left the world much too early. She sounded absolutely dynamic. Her talents and her zest for life will leave a void in many people's hearts. Carry on, Kath. With a heavy heart, Barb

I worked with Marilyn for years at Wilmington Trust. Our relationship did not begin smoothly. I found her demanding and she found me a poor substitute for my predecessor. Over time, however, her intelligence, her keen interest in work done well, and her sense of humor all became apparent to me. I found her interest in learning -- specifically her late-career graduate work in business -- remarkable. By the end of my time at Wilmington, we enjoyed sharing our perspectives with each other. I wish I had known her better. My condolences to Marilyn's family, loved ones, and co-workers.

And they left out your love for football and the eagles lol you were always a fan of lost causes and I am so sorry this one has failed you and I'm never going to forget you. You taught my hard head so much and after almost forty years never gave up on me and trying to talk sense to this block of wood. You all need to understand how special she was and the impact she made she is a saint and more than most will ever understand and I hope I have not intruded or embarrassed anyone. I'm just really a fool for not knowing her struggle and being there for her. God how I miss her.
