Walter H. Whittaker

Wilmington, DE - Walter H. Whittaker passed away on January 8, 2021, at the age of 91. His early years were spent in Rockville Center, New York, with his parents Rose and Thomas Whittaker, his brother Robert and his sister Dorothy. He spent his time doing everything athletic, excelling as a soccer goalie and basketball player. He also loved spending time sailing around the Long Island Sound on the family boat. After graduating from Southside High School in 1948, Walt went to the University of Kentucky on a basketball scholarship. He played under coach Adolph Rupp for two years. In 1951 he was drafted into the US Army where he served in the 503 Military Police Battalion at Fort Bragg, NC. Honorably Discharged in 1953, Walt went back to school, this time to Columbia University where he achieved a bachelor's degree in Business. He married Catharine Thompson shortly after he graduated in 1955.

In 1956, Walt and Catharine moved to Wilmington, DE, and he began working for the DuPont Company in the Textile Films Department. Five years later, he left DuPont for a job at the Wilmington Trust Company where he worked for the rest of his distinguished, 35-year career. He became the Vice President in charge of Deposit Operations, retiring in 1994. During his working years, Walt earned his masters degree at Rutgers University.

Walt was an avid boater, and he and his family enjoyed sailing the Sassafras River and Chesapeake Bay on their boat, the Sea Babe II. He and Catharine were members of the Wilmington Country Club, where he spent happy (and sometimes frustrating!) hours golfing. He loved to host dinner at the club for his family on special occasions. Walt also had a second house in Venice, Florida, for fifteen years. He and Catharine were "snow birds" and the family relished spending their school breaks there.

Walt is preceded in death by Catharine, his loving wife of 65 years, his daughter in law Mary Whittaker, his son in law, Scott Armiger and his brother Robert. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Hoch; his daughter, Pam Matsanka (Butch); his son, Thomas Whittaker (Julie); his daughter, Lauren Armiger and his eight grandchildren, Brooke Bleasser (Kevin), Lindsay Matsanka, Matthew Armiger, Catharine Armiger, Thomas Armiger, Ally Levy (Justin), Thomas Whittaker and Jacqueline Whittaker.

Finally, We would like to thank Stonegates Healthcare for taking excellent care of our father. We so appreciate everything the nurses, staff, and administrators did for him, and we value all the time they spent helping us navigate the last years of his life.

A private, graveside service will be held for Walt at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine.

Condolences to Mr. Whittaker's family. I had the honor to be Mr. Whittaker's secretary for many years. He was the best boss ever.
A fine gentleman in my book. Out of respect, I could never call him Walt - it was always Mr. Whittaker. I knew what # pencils he liked, what to say to callers when he was out golfing, & I understood when when I wore my yellow dress & said it was a red dress (he was colored blind). I was so lucky to have him as my boss in Deposit Services Administration. RIP Walter Hugh Whittaker - I will never forget you. Diane
