Mr. Smalley was the single most influential music teacher in my career. He developed a very fine band program at a little small school (Hinsdale) in southwestern New York State. Within a 3 year span, at least 5 of us students became career public school music teachers. His instruction is a huge legacy from such a small town and later on at Hilton. I will never forget him as a motivator, teacher, and friend. My prayers are with all of the family.

I met Dave way back in 1971 or 1972. He pushed me to be the best that i could be in playing my trumpet. Through Dave I discovered Maynard Ferguson and the Santa Clara Vanguard. He made band exciting and challenging and were it not for "Mr Smalley" being my music teacher, I would not still be playing.
Dave, you made me rise to the occasion and I truly owe my appreciation to you. I remember sitting in your living room hearing Santa Clara Vanguard playing Fanfare and Allegro. That following summer our Marching Band took on that tune. I remember you playing McArthur Park for me and all i wanted to do was hit those high notes. You gave me solos but even better you gave me a life long love of music.
We will all miss you but the memories will live on. Rest in Peace David "BUBBA" Smalley
