Margaret E. Mayk
Rochester - Margy lived out God's preferential option for the poor. Her pastor Ann liked her to read Bible passages because she didn't just read them, she PRAYED them. We knew her as a woman dedicated to God's work, but often expressing herself in the most irreverent ways. She took such joy in children that, wherever she was, life came to a halt so she could meet them or speak to their parents. We will remember her independent spirit, her special charisma, as a born storyteller, and as a Christian living the Gospel.
Margaret (Margy) E. Mayk, 69, of Rochester, NY, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2020. Born in Pottstown, PA, Margy was the daughter of the late Joseph Mayk Sr., and Genevieve (Corbett) Mayk. Margy received her bachelor's degree from Penn State and her master's degree from St. Paul's Seminary in Pittsburgh. She was a Cenacle sister, leading the retreat house in Rochester for several years. With Pat Merle, she was co-founder in 1992 of Step by Step, a ministry to women who are at risk, including the incarcerated. Step by Step continues to help women as a program of Volunteers of America, Western New York. She came to be a second grandma to Pat's grandkids. Margy was an active and beloved member of Covenant United Methodist Church. What she enjoyed doing in her spare time was scrap metaling; "other old ladies sat and crocheted or knitted," but she worked with metal. She fought a valiant battle with Alzheimer's, carried out in her unique and characteristically "willful" way, living on her own—with the help of her "village" of friends—until she was hospitalized a few weeks before her death.
Margy is survived by her sister, Mary Catherine Fell, wife of Larry; her brother, William Mayk, husband of Renee; her sister-in-law, Josephine Mayk; and seven nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother, Joseph Mayk Jr. A Celebration of Life will take place on February 22, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at Covenant United Methodist Church, 1124 Culver Rd., Rochester, NY 14609. Memorials may be given to Covenant United Methodist Church.

Margy was a dear friend, whom I met through Step by Step. I helped her in dealing with life--as much as she would let me--in the last three years. She was one of the most extraordinary people I have ever known: a profoundly faithful Christian, drawing people to her with her spark and her spice, and giving--ALWAYS giving. Her ability to understand others and seeing her connect with them were truly wonderful to behold. As her brother said at the service celebrating her life, "The Lord blessed her life so she could bless ours."

I knew Margy from Step by Step. Her sincete, humble compassion was unlike anything I have encountered. She made us all want to help and be the best person we could be. I am privileged to have learned self acceptance from her.

Margie was a dear friend and shared life with me as a Cenacle Sister for a number of years. She was deeply loving and loved by the Cenacle Sisters. We had Mass celebrated for her at the Chicago Cenacle last week . I will miss her phone calls and sharing on her life --always full of adventures.

Margie has been a much loved sister, aunt, prayer partner, friend, and free spirited soul. From visiting the Toy Museum to the Susan B. Anthony House to Niagra Falls to the Poconos to Ringing Rocks, our family has laughed, sung, played, walked, conversed, and dined together. Once Margie came to PA especially to care for me after surgery. Another time found us "yard sailing" on a balmy Saturday morning. My phone calls to Margie were always greeted with the question, "Is this my beloved sister-in-law?" More than once she has been linked to the whimsical, yet complex, young character of Maria in "The Sound of Music" who "waltzes on her way to mass and whistles on the stair". This complicated, meditative, fun-loving, sacrificial, memorable, and unique woman will always hold a special, irreplacable part in our lives. For this we are so grateful to God.

I have fond memories of Margy from working at the Cenacle when I was a teenager. She was always kind, caring and had a sense of humor. May she rest in peace.

To the Mayk Family,
I am saddened to read of Margies passing. I worked with her many, many years ago! She was a hoot! She told me she was headed to Seminary. I have thought of her often over the years with a smile on my face. Her Lord has a new angel and she is rejoicing in His presence!
