We are very sad to hear of the passing of Dick. Dick and Mary have been very special people in our lives for years. They were two of the three people at our wedding in Ely, MN twenty years ago. Our trips to their home in Vail were always special times. We love them both very much. Dick will be missed. But our memories of our time with him will never fade. Brad & Jennifer Bennett

Mr. Pownall, a firm but fair principal. Always approachable and willing to talk about anything. Used to see him in Vail in the summer when we went to play golf. Had a place on the mountain next to the Lodge at Vail. A good guy.

Dick was a truly humble, gentle soul; a Dear Friend of Vail Public Library; and, a sweet man who I was privileged to get to know these past 3-4 years. I loved to hear his voice when he phoned, frequently wishing to stop by and chat, and oftentimes bearing a gift of his Delicious homemade bread. Vail Public Library was truly fortunate to gain a collection of mountaineering books due to the generosity of Dick and several of his peers and fellow mountaineering enthusiasts. This new collection was officially announced to the community at a Celebration of Mountaineering held in March, 2013, with over 60 folks in attendance. A similar event was held in 2015, this time drawing a crowd of well over 100. Both events were true testaments to the popularity of the extreme sport of mountaineering and also to the love which so many folks had for Dick. In January of 2016, Dick and his wife & soulmate, Mary, were the 1st Vail locals to be captured in an oral history interview that kicked off the library's new Digital Archive Collection entitled "Vail Valley Voices". In August, 2016, the library celebrated Dick with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony naming our mountaineering collection after Dick. This event filled the library's Fireside Lounge with a crowd of over 60 of Dick's local "fans", friends and loved ones. Dick Pownall was a very Dear, Beloved mountain man who will be sorely missed, to be sure.~~Lori A. Barnes, Town Librarian, Vail Public Library.
