I can't believe it has been 4 months. I think of Rick every day. Every time I hear somebody with a loud cough, I think it is Rick walking into my office to greet me with a "Deep thought for a shallow mind." Over our 13 years relationship, Harrison was many things to me. At times he was a father figure passionate about keeping me on the right path. Other times, he was the Big Brother I would have always wanted leading me into just a little bit of trouble. Most often he was a friend. A loyal and caring friend. I used to love to hug Rick...mostly because it made him completely uncomfortable. I am pretty sure he never actually hugged me back but I always knew he loved me. As all of you that were lucky enough to be his friend knew, nobody ever doubted where they stood with Rick.
I can't imagine the pain my friend must have been going through and it will always torment me that I did not try harder to be there for him as I know he would have done that for me.
Mary, Megan and Ryan, I cannot begin to imagine how difficult the past four months have been for you...and I certainly won't pretend anything I have to say is of any import. However, out of respect to your husband/father, it is important for me to tell you that we had dozens of conversations about a husband and father's role. About the struggles and the joys. I know, without a doubt, that his love and devotion to you was unwavering.
Rick, I thank you for all that you have done for me and my family. Be warned, when I get up to where you are, I'm coming in for another hug.
