Sorry to learn of Duane's passing. He was a good friend and a heck of a guy.

In the early '90s, I heard about the marvelous conservation education workshops Duane had organized for Iowa's teachers. Although originally from Iowa, I was a Michigan middle school science teacher at the time, and the president of MAEOE (the Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education). We also were doing workshops, but for Michigan teachers. I felt we might be able to gain useful ideas, so I registered for an ICEC Winter Solstice workshop, and met Duane. Michigan teachers benefited greatly from Duane's enthusiasm and experience, as I came back loaded with suggestions that improved our workshops.

In subsequent years, Duane worked with others to create a conservation education plan for Iowa, and he sent me several copies of it, as I was immersed in doing the same thing in Michigan, and had become involved with national environmental education efforts through NAAEE. (The North American Alliance for Environmental Education.)

We both worked on planning committees for the Midwest Environmental Education Conference.

Iowa, through Duane's direction, piloted a host of national environmental education approaches, including Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Project Learning Tree, Project Leopold, Project WET, Project WILD, Aquatic Project WILD, and a national curriculum created by a California-based group.

Duane was a go-getter who made a difference with his life. It was great to see him last year at ICEC's reunion. It was our honor to know Duane and to have teamed up with him to improve conservation education in Iowa.

Duane left a wonderful legacy of memories for teachers who took his classes and for those who traveled with him on memorable trips. I was fortunate to have traveled with him on several trips and he did so much to make them interesting, educational , and fun. He was a great person and will be missed.

Duane was a Big Tree in Iowa conservation and environmental education history. He positively touched the lives of thousands of Iowa educators. He will be sorely missed but his legacy will live on through the work of the people he educated.
