Hugh Sidney Bird
Of Des Moines, Iowa - Hugh S. Bird, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center. He was born in South Byron, Wisconsin on September 2, 1933 to Sidney Jr., and Beryl Walker Bird.
Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley; son, Barry Bird of Des Moines, Iowa; daughters, Penny (David) Wilkinson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Dr. Sabrina (Dr. Hans-Jurgen) Voelz of Oerzen, Germany, 8 grandchildren, Bryan, Brittany, Bradley, Danielle, Bethany, Joel, Maximilian, and Emily; and many other family members and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Thomas Bird and June Bucar.
Pastor Hugh served United Methodist Churches in Boone; Waterloo - Evansdale - Raymond; Onawa - Turin; Swea City - Ledyard; Lamoni - Davis City - Decatur City before his retirement in 1991. In his earlier years, Hugh worked mostly in sales which included, Pharmaceutical and Bank Trust Advertising Sales. Hugh was very proud of being an Eagle Scout and enjoyed traveling to Germany, three trips to Israel, Turkey and Greece.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., with funeral service to begin at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Eastside Church of the Nazarene, 1451 E. 25th St., Des Moines. Graveside services will be held that afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Dows, Iowa.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Eastside Church of the Nazarene or St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 610 S. Evans Road, Evansdale, IA, 50707, in memory of Hugh.
