Des Moines
Denis Reed, 71, passed away Friday, October 13, 2017, in St. Petersburg, FL. Memorial Service will be held at 4 pm Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Dunn's Funeral Home with a visitation from 2 - 4 pm.
Denis was born June 21, 1946, in Carroll, IA, to John Reed and Carol (Reed) Murdock. Together they raised four boys on farms in Exira and Anita, Iowa. Later in life, Denis married Colleen (Berry) DeArmond of Des Moines on March 12, 1993, in Switzerland.
In 1964, while in high school, he set a Drake Relay record of a 4 minute and 21 second mile. Upon graduating from Anita High School, after receiving a track scholarship, Denis attended Drake University for both his undergraduate and Law Degrees. While attending, he was president of his class. Denis worked as an attorney for 40 plus years. He was a founder of Heavy Highway Contractors Association and a member of the Iowa Bar Association.
He used his entrepreneurial spirit and interest in travel to coordinate large groups primarily in Europe skiing and riding the railways. Overall, Denis has visited Europe over fifty times in his lifetime. That same entrepreneurial spirit led him to open "Pars and Cigars" in West Des Moines, from there he opened two additional stores in Missouri and Florida. Colleen and Denis together enjoyed time on the water, which led them to the destinations of the Dominican Republic, Lake of the Ozarks, and ultimately St. Petersburg.
Denis is survived by his wife, Colleen Reed; son, Alex Reed of NE; daughter, Jennie (Derick) Anderson of IA; two stepsons, Tyler (Chelsea) DeArmond of MN and Bill (Nicole) DeArmond of MT; stepdaughter, Julie DeArmond of FL; stepfather, Stan Murdock of IA; brothers, Brad Reed of KY, Doug Reed of IA, and Tim Reed of FL; grandchildren, Zach, Mia, Mackenzie, Lincoln, Liam, Kayson, Brayden, and Danielle. He was preceded in death by his father, John Reed and mother Carol (Reed) Murdock.
