James Ramon Coussens
Sterling Heights - lovingly known as "Jim", died peacefully in his home at the age of 79 on November 2, 2017, following complications of lung cancer. For 57 years of marriage, he was cared for by his beloved wife Edith Coussens and is also survived by his sister Diane Williams; son Randall Coussens; daughter Jody Coussens Murray; daughter-in-law Michelle Coussens; grandchildren Ashley, Darcy, Nicholas, McKenzie, and Jacob; and several nieces and nephews. His grandchildren, who called him "Pepaw," were the light of his life. Jim was a former trumpeter with an undeniable passion for jazz music and old movie-musicals. With his carefree smile and characteristic wink, he was an artist and dreamer who appreciated all of life's joys and was always eager to help those around him. Jim was a graduate of Wayne State University, where he has donated his remains for study by the next generation of medical students. At Jim's request, a funeral service will not be held, though he will certainly be in the thoughts of all who knew him. Jim's family requests that friends put on a jazz tune in his honor.

I only met Jim a few times, when he brought Randy back to college in Evanston. While I did not know him well, I knew his son well; Randy was my roommate at Northwestern.
What I do know is, Randy was his father's son. When I saw them together, it was like seeing an older version of Randy- in how they spoke, in how they acted. And I know Randy, for all the grief I gave him then and in the ensuing 35 years, is one of the best guys I have ever met. And that Randy got that way from his dad.
Thanks Jim.
