Richard was a valued colleague and friend. As Department Chair, he sponsored my tenure, promotion, and award applications, and could not have been more supportive of all my professional endeavors. I will always remember his warmth and gregariousness, and our conversations about Canadian politics, hockey, and all manner of other topics (as well as our outings to see games of the once-upon-a-time Wayne State hockey team). I also treasure his dedication to the support of students and to the ethos of public service. He will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry, Sandy, for your loss. Losing someone you love deeply, is very difficult. I'm sure you have tremendous support through your family and friends and your faith will help to make things easier. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Rich Elling was my adviser when I was in graduate school at WSU. I will never forget his personal guidance throughout the program. Rich was not only an adviser to the students but became a great friend to us, and he loved sitting with students in his office. He helped many of us prepare for the comprehensive exam and I will be forever grateful to him. Dr. Elling helped me to get where I am today. My love and prayers for his family.

Dr. Elling was a wonderful professor. I was a PhD student in the department and one of the things that I will always remember is how much he loved his two sons, and how fondly he would talk about them. My sincere condolences.
