Ellen Rudy Obituary

Rudy, (Mary) Ellen Beam
1936 - 2018
(Mary) Ellen Beam Rudy, age 82, of Columbus, died Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Kobacker House. Raised in Moundsville, WV, by her late parents William and Mary Ellen Beam, she then attended The Ohio State University to become a nurse. She met her husband Ted in 1956 while on spring break in Florida and they married in 1959. She received a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Dayton and a Masters in Nursing at the University of Maryland. She worked as a nurse instructor at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and then moved to Cleveland to pursue her PhD in nursing at Case Western Reserve University. She held the Mellen endowed chair in acute nursing and served as the Associate Dean for research while there. During these years, she loved to take her family water and snow skiing and got the bug to travel internationally when she won a trip to Jamaica on the TV show Concentration in 1966. Her career passion became bedside nursing, especially where "the action was" like intensive care and the emergency rooms. Her career culminated in being named Dean of Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh for ten years. Dr. Rudy initiated the award ceremony Cameos of Caring for recognition of excellence in bedside nursing. This award has now been adopted in numerous nursing schools and 45 hospitals. She has been principal investigator on five National Institutes of Health funded projects. Dr. Rudy has been widely published and co-authored several text books. Dr. Rudy has been honored with numerous awards including the OSU College of Nursing Outstanding Alumni Award, and Ohio Nurses Assn Excellence in Nursing Award, and was named a "Living Legend" by the American Academy of Nursing. In 2007, she came out of retirement to serve as interim Dean at the College of Nursing at Marquette University. She was noted for 20 questions of young relatives and her funny folk sayings. Her interest in people was amazing; being known for remembering details about lots of people and their families. She loved family get togethers and the games that were played and was always willing to offer advice and guidance to younger relatives and colleagues.
Survived by her husband Ted; sons Richard, Alan, and William; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and brother William D. Beam of Greensburg, PA. Family will receive friends 4-7pm Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road where a Memorial Service will be held at 11am Saturday, December 29, 2018. Ellen was a classmate of mine in Nursing at OSU and was a leader in everything she did. She was fun and funny, but a good friend and an example to all who knew her. The world is a better place because of Ellen. I shall never forget her.

My heartfelt sympathy to Ted and her children.

I'll miss you, Ellen.

I am so sorry to hear about Ellen's passing. I have such fond memories of her at Pitt--her enthusiasm for nursing, her willingness to go to the trenches as a nurse in the ED even though she was Dean. I am especially thankful for her kindness when she came to see me at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus where I was a patient and away from my home in Pittsburgh! So like her to do.
My prayers go to the family.

Dear Ted and family,
You have my deepest sympathy. Ellen was a cherished alum and very special friend of ours at The Ohio State University College of Nursing. We were blessed to have her in our lives. I always cherished my times with her. She was an amazing woman, nursing leader, researcher, and mentor who always gave me honest sage advice. I will miss her friendship, warmth and humor. I will keep all of you in thoughts and prayers.

I will always remember the joy and laughter of Ellen. She was a mentor to us all in Cleveland and she always reminded us as Nurses that it was the patient first and foremost. I always thought she was one of the great Nursing leaders of our generation. I am sad to hear that she is gone.
I send to her family my deepest condolences. I will keep her and you all in my thoughts and in my prayers.
