If you ask any student of the late 50's who was their favorite teacher of the non basics, almost everyone would say Burkie. Her stern, forceful yet loving approach was admired and respected by all of us. Because I worked for Shaker years after graduation, I had the good fortune to run into her numerous times. I know she did not remember my name, but she know that she had been my teacher. I enjoyed reminiscing with her. She was irreplaceable, and she will always have a special place in my heart.

I owe so mush to Lucy. I was being drafted in 1972 because of a #1 draft # and many great schools had interest in a male elem. PE teacher but the Army was getting me 1st in June. However, after joining the Nat'l Guard and telling many of the schools I would be out in early Oct. I still had no "bites". Then mid -July the call came while I was in boot camp.Shaker would hire a sub. teacher for 6 weeks until I got there!! Totally unheard of then and now. Hopefully she saw something in me at a visitation to my student teaching school in Bowling Green and the follow up interview at the Bd. of Ed. bldg. on Parkland. I retired after 44 years of teaching and practically every day I an humbled by having had a great career due to Lucy seeing some value in me. I won the lottery of life. I will be in debt to her and her wisdom, enthusiasm and professionalism to hire many other fine PE staff members I had the opportunity to work with. She was an unique elite! There are sometimes only 1,2, people in our lives that you can never forget what they have done for you and Lucy was one of them. I had the opportunity to visit her in the nursing home for most an hour 3 weeks ago and the whole time we held a hand and just enjoyed simple talk and memories. That will be one of my greatest moments with her. Blessed peace to her and her friends/family.

"Burkie" was so very special! She took the time to care and encourage and to be a friend. I was fortunate to know her while I was at Shaker and to run into her occasionally after I was out in my world. She was always so happy to "catch up!" My sincerest sympathies to her family and many friends

Lucy was a tremendous educator influencing colleagues beyond the field of physical education. She challenged, guided and supported us all. It was with profound sadness that I read of her passing. She will be missed.

What a fabulous woman- way ahead of her time. She changed my life utterly and I am forever grateful to have been a ducking. I still have my field hockey practice shirt #55, albeit tattered, but saved in a pillow. THANK YOU!

She was an inspiration, supporting her baby ducks and wishing them to be their best. We were so fortunate to have her leading the PE department where sports for high school women were far ahead of other schools. Her contributions to the field and more importantly to so many individuals who were touched by her energy and positive support will be missed.

Miss Burkett was the most fun, sympatico, smart and effective PE teacher I ever had. I remember her so fondly. Had no idea of her eminence in her field although it does not surprise me.

I shall miss "Burkie" dearly. She was not only a great P E teacher, but one of the nicest people I know. She always had a kind smile, and she was interested in the lives of all her students. What a role model!

I was saddened to hear of Ms. Burkett's passing. I, among many of her students at Shaker Heights High School in the 1960's remember how she cared for her students. She more than once took an interest in me and concern when she thought something might be amiss. She was an original and represented the best a teacher could be. She is remembered fondly.
