Roland Hall Obituary

Hall Col. Roland P. Hall, USAF (ret.), passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, April 17, 2017. He was born August 25, 1922 in Haynesville, Louisiana to the late Elmer and Mellie Hall. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by brother Durward. Roland entered the Army Air Corps in 1942, graduated from flight school in Corsicana, Texas as a 2nd Lt, and after 32 years retired from the US Air Force as a Colonel and Command Pilot. He served during WWII, the Berlin Airlift, Korea, and Vietnam, and earned a number of medals and ribbons, among them the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with 4 clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Legion of Merit. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland and the Air War College. Following retirement from the Air Force he worked for 20 years for The Ohio State University Research Foundation as Administrator of Grants for Heart and Cancer Research. His last job was as Director of Public Services for the City of Gahanna, where he retired at the age of 80. Roland often stated that his life really began when he met and married his wife Edie (Langner) in 1946. They were happily married for 71 wonderful and exciting years. In addition to his wife, Roland is survived by daughters, Rosemary Hall and Ingrid Stevens; son, Chris Hall; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. All his life Roland has been known and loved for his kindness, his willingness to help others, and of course, for his endearing smile. He has been an amazing human being who will be missed not only by his family, but by the many people whose life he has touched. A "Celebration of Life" will be held on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 4 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Not sure what to say?

Well, in true Schnell fashion, I learned about Roland Hall passing from this life today (the day after his funeral). What a guy. A wonderful neighbor. Always reaching out to help others. A model for the rest of us. If there's a Happy Hour in heaven, I'm sure my mom (Wanda) and dad (Fred) met him at the Pearly Gates with appropriate liquid refreshment!

Roland Hall was THE example of a good man. He and Edie were friends of my parents from before the time I was born. He smiled, he laughed, he cared, he was kind . . . he was wonderful. The Halls came to our house for Thanksgiving one year in Hawaii. After dinner as the Tryptophan coma was settling in, my dad (a USAF Major) flipped a coin with Roland (a USAF Colonel) to see who got to nap on the couch and who got to sleep on the floor. My dad won . . . my mom was aghast, "Don! You aren't going to make a Colonel sleep on the floor!!" My dad replied, "But it's Roland!" Roland Hall laughed and went to sleep on the floor. Roland, you will live on in our hearts for all days; and through the lives of your children, grand children, and great grand children . . . you will thereby be immortal in spirit. Thank you for your many gifts of love and kindness.

Col. Hall was a unique, one of a kind, person. I know of no one who did not love him the minute he entered their life. I cherish the time I knew him and his lovely wife. My deepest condolences to his family. The world became a better place because of him. Regards, Karen Angelou

On Monday afternoon family & friends will come together to celebrate the life of Roland. I could not help but think of the first time I met Roland, my future brother-in-law. I lived with my parents and 3 brothers in an apartment in West Berlin. One day the doorbell rang, and upon opening the door my mother was confronted by a gentleman in amer. uniform with the biggest smile on his face. He embraced my mother saying "Mutti" (mom). I stood next to her and thought "this is the most handsome guy I have ever seen". Later that day I sat on his lap reading him proudly the first English words out of my schoolbook. Who would have thought that day, that many years later Roland was going to be the man who walked me down the isle to be married to my husband Paul in the Air Force Chapel in Topeka Kansas. I could not have asked for a kinder brother-in-law, and my whole family will always treasure the memories we have of him.
