Bret Koster - 2/18/1950 - 2/10/2020
Passed away of cancer in Durango, Colorado. Bret was raised in Salida, Colorado and moved to the Durango area in the early 1980s. Along with his quirky sense of humor, Bret was kind loving 'people person' whose path crossed daily with many people, whether at his recent positions at Durango Silverton Railroad and Elmore's Corner Store, or in the past at Coca-Cola, Strater and Tamarron. Bret's path crossed with as many dogs as it did with humans! Bret was a passionate volunteer at La Plata Humane Society since 2010 and serving on the board from 2012 until his passing. Bret was particularly proud of his organized "Mutts in the Mountains" where volunteers take shelter dogs out for long walks for exercise.
Survived by younger brother Scott Koster of Stanfordville, NY; brother-in-law Alan Boan of Fort Walton Beach, FL; nephews Ryan, Derek and Evan Koster of Colorado and step children Rydor McCune and Darcy Swymeler. Predeceased, in 2018, by sister Jana Koster Boan.
Internment private with family. Celebration of Bret's life to be announced at a later date.
To honor Bret, take a rescue dog for a walk!

4 Years and we all still think of you daily, so glad I was lucky enough to have you in my life. Just thought you'd be so happy to know that Henry is quite the explorer now, even going for backpacking trips, and Lady walks with me every day! Thank you Bret, love you big guy!

Brett, I can't believe it has been a year, I miss you more today than yesterday and less than tomorrow. Lady and Phil send their love, not a day goes by that we don't think of you and what a role model you were to us all.

Howdy Bret,
I know you are looking down on all of the
wonderful friends you have made over the years. We have done so much together the last 38 years, its going to be hard with you not being there at the WADI. Rest in peace my friend.

Bret working with you at the Strater was a joy. Your smile, watching you work through a joke, your concern for others will be greatly missed in this world. We need so many more loving people in the world like you. See ya.

Having the big C myself, I have a lot of empathy for what happened to Bret. He was always a strong supporter and good friend of mine when I was president of the board. Bret will be greatly missed by both members of the Humane Society and other people in the community. Love you man! You were born the same year I was.

As someone going through the big C myself, I feel a lot of empathy for Bret. He was always one of my best supporters and friends when I was president of the board. He will be greatly missed by Humane Society members and other residents of Durango. He was also born the same year as I was, so I can really relate to what happened to him.

A good friend with a big heart Bret was always there when needed. Enjoyed time with him playing poker with seniors, walking dogs, various meals. Laughs and good natured rubbing always. Thanks Bret
