Clare Ellen McCracken
September 27, 1922 - February 3, 2021
Former Resident of Newark, CA
Clare Ellen McCracken, née Nugent, aged 98, died peacefully on February 3, 2021 after a lengthy struggle with congestive heart failure.
Clare was born in Seattle, WA to the late Raymond and Edna (Cullinane) Nugent. She attended St. Cyril's School and Holy Names High School in Oakland. Eager to help her large family, she began working as a secretary in San Francisco after graduation. Clare met her true love, her late husband William ("Bill") McCracken, in 1943 shortly before Bill was deployed overseas to fight in WWII. They courted through love letters and married after the war ended, raising six children together: Ellen (Mario Garcia), Lori, Patrick, John (Toni), JoAnne and Sharon (Bill Chestnut), all of whom spent tender times with Clare during her illness. Clare and Bill remained affectionate sweethearts throughout their 67-year marriage, often spotted dancing together in the living room. She showed boundless love to her children, always attentive and ready to share her wise counsel throughout her life. She balanced perfectly her happy home life with her challenging career as a social worker. Following retirement, she and Bill traveled extensively in their RV, exploring the country. Clare was intelligent, patient and kind, and had a sparkling personality. She was a skilled seamstress, sewing her entire fashionable wardrobe and even her own wedding dress—so impeccably designed that it was featured in the local newspaper. Proud of her Irish heritage, Clare spent countless hours researching family genealogy. Clare was a deeply faithful woman and a long-standing member of St. Edward and St. Christopher parishes. Her faith informed every aspect of her life.
Clare is also survived by her sister Barbara Ovalle, her grandchildren Giuliana (Calista), Giancarlo (Makeila), Kate, Steven, Niccolo, Mary Clare and Francis, and great-grandson Luca. She was preceded in death by her siblings Francis Nugent, Mary Ferguson, Margaret Ginnett and David Nugent, and her grandson Will McCracken. She will be deeply missed by all of those who loved her, but will always remain in our hearts. The family has held a private visitation, funeral and internment.
