To the family: May the comfort from family and friends strengthen you during this difficult time, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

It's been months now since your loss and life goes on whether you like it or not. I just want you to know there are those still thinking about you and concerned for how you are doing. I am a neighbor in Redbridge and drive by your house every day. I think of you often.

Sgt. Dunakin was one of the nicest and most responsive police officers I know. He and three of his fellow motorcycle officers worked diligently to ticket people who were running the STOP sign in my neighborhood. I remembered noting down in my file of traffic contacts what a nice fellow he was. He was very responsive and even phoned me to follow up a few times. My thoughts and prayers to his family and fellow officers.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mark for the past 7 years while working at the restaurant where they ate almost daily! I will miss him, he was a great man..always funny and always sweet to me. I am so sorry for your loss.
April 19, 2009
Thanks Mark for being one of OPD's finest. I first met you when you volunteered to be a role player when I was in the police academy. And yes, I remember you played a passive drunk person that I had to take into custody. Your role was to wrap your arms around a pole, and I had to use pain compliance so that you would loosen your grip, and I could handcuff you. You almost did not say "uncle" in time, and I almost broke your finger...I will never forget that.

But mostly, I remember what a nice person you were and well respected by everyone. I am so very sorry that this tragic event had to happen, my thoughts are with your family, especially your wife, and 3 children.

Rest now my fallen brother
Lay soft your suffering back
Rest well and forever
Your memory shall not lack
Rest your tired hands
Wipe clean your weary brow
Rest with St. Florian
Your spirit now endowed
Rest here your breaking heart
We know you gave your all
Rest easy, you’ve done your part
You’ve answered your last call
Rest knowing that in god we sought
Oh Lord, watch over another who just fell
Rest assured your troubled thought
As we ring the final bell.

Sgt. Mark Dunakin all families of law enforcement officers are heartbroken over your tragic and very untimely death. God will bless and keep your family. I am the wife of law enforcement and the daughter of a retired "motor", which I refer to as "solo". You have a special place in my heart. My father suffered the loss of many brothers in the line of duty. My brother, sister and myself always felt very fortunate that our father was never taken from us. My heart is broken for your wife and children. May you always protect and spread your wings over your family.

With much respect and gratitude

May God be with the families of these great men. They offered up the greatest sacrifice, to their community and Nation. I have been a dispatcher for a Sheriff's Office for almost 19 years. Never will it be easy to hear of these tragities. I look at the pictures of these young men and I cry for their department and especially the families. I know the Law Enforcement community is hurting right now and may all the Officers Nationwide, please go safely through their next shift. Be Aware at all times. I have to send them out on the calls, and listen to them on the radio and pray for each and everyone of them to stay safe. A special message to the Dispatchers that were working on this fateful day, Continue to answer the call and do what you do best, knowing our thoughts go with each one of you.
