Was shocked and saddened to find Dan's obituary this morning. Have fond memories of great fun and strategic times with Dan at the Victoria Chess Club.
Recall one night at the chess club when everyone was deep in thought over their chess boards; so quiet you could hear a pin drop. For some reason I started softly singing, "there's a kind of hush all over the world tonight...", and everyone cracked up, especially Dan, who laughed the loudest; good times!
Also enjoyed investigating a few city files with Dan, when he was Senior Bylaw Officer in Victoria. Dan possessed great organizational skills, confidence and a keen sense of situational awareness.
Rest easy my friend!

My fondest memories are shared with the Dan Scoones family as I remember our work times together at the City of Victoria. I am sorry to hear of Dan's passing but still remember fondly Dan's laugh, stories, jokes and all good things Dan would share each day. God shares his love and good times with family and friends.

I just heard of Dan's passing. I met Dan through his sister Jane in 1974 when we were in Prince Rupert. Somehow Dan and I ended up at his place playing many games of chess of which he won most (if not all!). I played some tournaments in Victoria 2020 and was hoping I might see him again. Alas, he is gone too soon. RIP, old friend.

I just heard the sad news and I'm shocked. Dan was a great guy, always the soul of kindness and extremely good company. We knew each other through chess and had an inside joke where I would ask him 'what of Kotov?' (the refrain of a poem by Nat Halper on how to pronounce chess masters' names) and he would quote some of his favourite lines, like:
Will she, will she
Always Flohr me?
Will she never
Phil-adore me?
Will she never
Care a damn bit
For my Center
Counter Gambit
He would then laugh his characteristic laugh and shake his head. Condolences to his family and friends.

I have known Dan, through chess, since the late 60's. In the last few years I got to know him a lot better as we regularly met at coffee shops to look at chess games. His chess book knowledge was second to none. One thing that stood out, during these sessions, was that he would suddenly stand up and walk away. It was always to help someone... a person in a wheelchair trying to get through the door... an elderly person with a full tray trying to get to a table, etc. No matter how engrossed we were in the chess games, he was always aware of his surroundings and quick to assist someone that needed help.

Dan and I met while working for the City of Victoria. He always had a book in his hand, a smile on his face and a fantastic story or joke to tell whenever we went for coffee together. I admired him for his intelligence , honesty and his attention to his job responsibilities but mostly because he was just a great guy to have as a colleague and friend. As we both lived in the Westshore suburbs of Victoria i would occasionally drive him home after work. I had a couple of CDs that we both liked and would crank up the volume on them to the point where we left our job responsibilities in the dust.
Conversations always included his admiration of his son Aaron who was working on becoming a professional musician.
His smile says it all.
My sincere condolences to his family. God Bless

I first met Dan at UVic in the early 70's and was another of his regular chess partners. We casually stayed in touch over the years and met periodically at chess tournaments. More recently we have also communicated through the chess forums. I am saddened by his passing, which underlines how fragile life is. Farewell, Dadian, you are missed.

We learned and played chess together - I was 11 and he was 8 and he could best me soon after we started. RIP my well remembered childhood chum.

We both fondly remember Dan from our time working together for the Ministry of Highways at the Saanich District Office back in the mid 70’s. We reconnected when Dan moved into a home on "Scoones Place" not far from where we still live.
Dan was a terrific guy who always seemed to have a smile on his face. A great conversationalist with a brilliant mind. Guys like him don’t come around that often. That picture is the Dan Scoones we remember.
Dan most certainly added value to the worldhe will be sorely missed. Gone far to soon.

Can this be the Danny Scoones I played chess against so often in the halcyon days of our youth? It looks like it could be him. Danny was one of my favourite opponents back in the day, (a) because he could beat me, but (b) because he was always able to distract me with good conversation.
Hard to say, because his is a large family and names may be repeated, but it looks like the Danny I knew as a good guy and ferocious competitor. His family must miss him enormously.
