I was very saddened to hear the news of Ian's passing.
It was my privilege to work with Ian for 5 years at the Tribunal. Ian was a true gentleman and a scholar, the best boss I've ever known and I truly respected and admired him. We had lost touch in recent years, however I often thought of Ian and have such fond memories of working alongside him during his excellent leadership of the Tribunal.
My sincerest condolences to the Strachan family.

I remember Ian very well. I was one year ahead of him at Osler and we were good friends. He was at the firm for just a short time but while there he made a good impression as a dedicated, hard worker and a very nice guy. I'm glad he went on to have a successful career, but sad he died too young. RIP.

I won't soon forget the summer I worked closely with Ian, as assistant to the Chair. He never raised his voice. Never really seemed ill-tempered. He welcomed all visitors - whether anticipated or unannounced - with an easy smile. I'm glad to have known him. We've missed his presence since his retirement, but his grandiose spirit carries on.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Strachan family. Ian was a true gentleman and human being. Played hockey with and against him in the MOHL aand remember driving with him to the world seniors hockey tournament in Ottawa. Rest in peace, Ian

It is with sadness that I learned of the loss of Ian. My deepest sympathies to his family.
It was a privilege to work for and with Ian at the Tribunal, where I served as a Vice Chair from 1999 until 2018. Ian was an excellent mentor, who encouraged people to do their best, and to be their best. Never compromising in doing "the right thing", not suffering fools, but fair and compassionate to all who needed support, Ian led the Tribunal with integrity. Before becoming Chair, he also wrote many leading decisions which still, years later, shape compensation law.
Moreover, once you got past the occasionally gruff exterior, Ian was a warm and funny man, who enjoyed a good joke over a good glass of wine (or, if we're being honest, perhaps two!).
Long may his memory endure.

I was appointed to WSIAT as a part-time Vice-Chair in 2006 and worked under Ian's leadership until he retired in 2016. He worked hard to bring out the best in us and he was particularly kind to me at a time when I was experiencing some personal challenges.
I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you.

Ian was an honest, forthright and fierce pragmatist. I had deep respect for him and considered him my friend. He was sometimes too tall for me to talk to, but sitting together with a beer (or two, to be honest) he was a warm and most approachable colleague. He will be missed.
