I miss him still; his charm, his collaboration in a difficult medical institution environment. OHSU could use his presence now.

Dr. Kendall and his partner in crime, Betty, have always been unfailingly supportive and kind to me. I helped them in their garden for many years and always cherished the time I was fortunate to spend with them. Dr. Kendall would sometimes climb up on scaffolding to tend to his beloved grapes which created some good-natured angst for both Betty and I. We all have birthdays in March so we would all go out to a fancy lunch together to celebrate. Dr. Kendall was also kind enough to "pin" me when I graduated from nursing school, a task usually delegated to close family. They both attended my more recent graduation as well, which was a challenge for them I know, but their presence meant the world to me. I would not have achieved the level of success I have enjoyed were it not for their support, kindness and encouragement. I can never thank them enough and Dr. Kendall will be greatly missed. He was a special person to me and many others.

John was a man who left the world a better place than he found. With his wife, Betty, they blazed trails for others and set the standard for love and respect. Working with Betty on the MESA board I learned to admire and love them both and I cherish the time we shared. To Betty and their family, I hope in time this loss will become only happy memories of a wonderful man.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of a dear neighbor, who was unfailingly kind and upbeat to everyone in the neighborhood. He had a wonderful sense of humor, that was well sharpened by the wit of his dear wife Betty. He was exceedingly modest as to his great achievements in medicine. He will be remembered for his love of gardening (tomatoes and grapes) and his contributions not only to his city and neighborhood but to mankind.

Dr. Kendall was a great and gentle man. I was honored to be his neighbor. At our neighborhood "soup nights" he made the best gazpacho I've ever tasted. He even shared the recipe.

John was a dear friend who, with his wife Betty, was central to our neighborhood community. We will treasure memories of John's quirky sense of humor and his diligence in creating perfectly crafted raised beds for our neighborhood garden. In addition to being a great doctor, John was a truly fine human being whose memory we treasure.

I met Dr. Kendall my first week at OHSU in 1982. He was unfailingly kind and friendly every time he saw me- even tho I was support staff. I was lucky enough to get to know his wife and daughter as well. Such interesting people.
One fall Dr. Kendall and his daughter Kay took me mushroom hunting. It was an amazing class not just in mushrooms but about conservation. One of my favorite memories.
Godspeed on your journey Dr. Kendall.

I was so fortunate to have known Dr. Kendall during my time at OHSU. He was and remained a fair decent and compassionate Med School dean. I hope his example serves as a legacy at the Hill. I also extend my condolences to John Jr. You had a great dad John.

I am saddened to learn of Dr. Kendall's passing and I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family. He was Dean of the School of Medicine in 1988 when I was being recruited to join the Department pf Anesthesiology and serve as Anesthesiology Service Chief at Portland VA. His role in that process formed a significant component of my decision to accept the offer. Dr. Kendall was a fundamentally good and kind person. He was easily among the very best individuals with whom I have been privileged to work over the years. He lead from the heart with truth and kindness. I always saw him as a bastion of complete Integrity, hardworking Commitment, laser sharp Focus on positive achievement, and enormous Energy. I will always cherish his memory and the opportunities I had to work with him.
