I was saddened to hear of Steve's passing. He was an intern assigned to work with me at St. Vincent's Hospital. We had many a night when we were on call that we either played pool or watched television. Steve was a pleasant person and very smart. His death is a loss to the world.

To my exceptionally smart cousin...wish I had known you better. It is comforting to read the guest book entries and realize how much you meant to so many of your friends and colleagues. I pray you are enjoying visiting with your parents and mine at this moment. My Mom always loved you very much. Until we meet again Steve...

I am so sorry for the loss of your dear loved one. It's comforting to know that God cares for all of us and losing a loved one is something we cannot get use to. The Bible gives us hope that one day we can see our dear loved one again. On behalf of all mankind Jesus surrender his soul for many. John 15:13 says “No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his soul on behalf of his friends.”

I knew Steve when he was a neurology resident at Vanderbilt. He always called me "boss." Whenever he presented a patient he included a comparison to one of the great characters of English literature. We kept in contact over the years and I read all three of his mystery novels (and gave them each 5 stars on the Amazon review). I will miss him.

I am married to Teresa Olmsted and she worked with you Dr. Rudd. I never had the honor to meet you in person, but I know the world will have an empty place where you left us for Heaven.

Kwaheri Rifiki. We met in 1987 at JFK Intl. both traveling to Kenya on safari. I asked him to watch my bag while I toughened up my nerves with a RUM for the long flight. He grabbed the bags, and hoisted a beer too! (In Kenya we hoisted Tuskers over two weeks). I still have the beer mug and we never lost touch.
I'm privileged to have a signed copy of 'Midnight Red' I'm now about to start re-reading it.
This was shocking news. Heaven may be brighter, but the world has sustained a tremendous loss. He was the most educated, quick witted, humble and loving friend. How he loved Alabama and sharing stories of Mom. Rudd cared....
I hear his voice as I type, wishing we were on the phone. How I loved just calling him, 'Rudd'!
Kwaheri Rudd. We'll have more stories to tell...

I wish I could write like Steve...
I met Steve in the late '80's; his Mom, Lurlene (Harpo) was my beloved morning receptionist. She introduced me to Steve & a great friendship developed.
Steve would come down every week to take his mom out to lunch when her shift ended. I was invited to join them & it turned into way too much time spent discussing books, writers, music, lyrics, bands, Buffett, politics, the law & life. We discussed Irving & he turned me on to McGuane. We would quote lines to each other & tears would appear from our laughter. His mom would just sit & smile...all over Mexican.
Steve possessed more education than anyone I have ever known; more importantly, he possessed more knowledge than anyone I have ever known. You had to really be attentive & "think" when you talked to Steve. Conversations were @ the uppermost level; I had to bring my "A" game.
Have you read "Midnight Red", The Sooty Man" or "Blues for Suzannah"?
Can someone get me a copy of "Harp & Perry"?
He was Shake Tiller & I was Billy Clyde Puckett. "Ya know Billy C, that ball ain't round; it'll take a funny bounce on ya."
I miss sharing emails w/ Steve. I do have a very large file though...
Steve was the closest friend that I have ever lost...
"Ya know Billy C., nobody ever said it wasn't gone be semi-tough."

I was a patient of Dr.Rudd's at one time and the only Dr. I could ever email with a question and get a quick response to boot. Whatever test I asked him to do, he never questioned it, just did it. I didn't know him that well and was distressed when I saw it in the paper. Can anyone let me know what happened? RIP Dr. Rudd..

Steven was not only my doctor, but a great friend. I would go to his office and end up staying for three hours talking about our favorite writers, the merits of Apple vs. Windows and, of course his life. We were both writing books based upon earlier periods of our lives and shared manuscripts. His book, "Harp and Perry" was about growing up in Birmingham during the sixties. It was also about his parents and he lovingly described his family in a way that made you believe you were there growing up beside Steven. I offered names of agents in New York for his book although I know he likely had one here. I hope this new book will get published.
He reached out to me regularly via email. I got sick in January and could not respond for a while because of seizures. I am so sad I did not try harder to do so. I had no idea he was sick again. He did not say. He is a beautiful man who left us way too soon.
Love you forever.

You were loved by so many and the medical community have lost one of their best. You now have gone home to be with your mother and father and I know you are making heaven even brighter and laughter all around. Oh, but we miss you so and always will. Rest in Peace dear Dr. Steve Rudd!

What wonderful accomplishments you made during your life on this earth. I know how proud your mom and dad were of you. You gave so much of yourself to others, and you have helped the countless through the years. I know Our Sweet Lord welcomed you with open arms and you will be sorely missed on this earth.

I remember Steven from our high school years at B.B. Comer. We were in the same graduating class of 1970. He will be missed in the medical community.
