Andrew March Obituary

Andrew Lee March, 85, of Lakewood, CO, passed away on July 15, 2018. He was born in New Haven, CT, and spent most of his youth in Swarthmore, PA. During the summers, he frequently traveled to Packer Corners, VT, visiting cousins and other family in nearby Bernardston, MA. He attended Kenyon College for one year before transferring to Swarthmore College, graduating in 1953 with a BA in language and literature. As a Fulbright Scholar, he taught in Austria for one year. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy and in the Naval Reserve from 1955-1963. He received an MA in geography from Syracuse University and a PhD in geography and China studies from the University of Washington. During an academic career that spanned over four decades, he held faculty teaching positions at Ohio State University, Columbia University, Queens College, the University of Denver, and Metropolitan State University of Denver. He taught courses on a wide range of topics, including human geography, environmental science, Latin America through geography, and English as a second language. In 1968, while a faculty member at Columbia, he participated in the campus-wide protests against the Vietnam War. He later demonstrated to close the nuclear weapons plant in Rocky Flats, CO. Later in his career, he taught online courses and worked as a school bus driver for Jefferson County Public Schools, primarily serving special-needs children and adults. He married Kathryn Pendleton in 1969. The two co-authored five books: Common Edible and Medicinal Plants of Colorado, The Quest for Wild Jelly, The Mushroom Basket, The Wild Plant Companion, and The Wild Taste. He also published The Idea of China: Myth and Theory in Geographic Thought and numerous papers, poems, essays, and newspaper columns. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, and his four children and their spouses: Christopher March and his wife, Blandine Laferrère, of New York, NY; David March and his wife, Carolyn March, of Falmouth, MA; Jocelyn March Dreier and her husband, Marc Dreier, of Ridgewood, NJ; and Geoffrey March and his wife, Aesoo Chung, of Lakewood, CO. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Lucie, Kevin, Matthew, Daniel, Emma, Jason, and Ashley. His three oldest children are from a previous marriage to Susan Marx, who predeceased him. He will be remembered as a devoted humanist who loved nature, language, literature, and ideas. He believed in nonviolence and simplicity of lifestyle and found spiritual comfort in nature, meditation, and the silent gatherings of Quaker meetings. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
