Anthony R. Costa, Sr. 89, passed away peacefully at home on June 24, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Ludlow on August 12, 1930, son of the late Dominic R. and Anna ( Fernandes) Costa, he was the youngest brother to his siblings Benita, Mary, John, and Millie, all who predeceased him. Tony was a lifelong resident of Ludlow where he was proudly devoted to his faith as a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He worked for 42 years at Monsanto from where he retired, and in his spare time, he enjoyed wine making, gardening, golfing, and working around the house. He was also an avid sports fan, particularly of the Boston Red Sox and Bruins, but his greatest joy in life was the time he spent with his family, especially their 40 years of family vacations to Hampton Beach. Within the community, he was a life member of the Springfield Elks Lodge 61 and a member of the former Portuguese American Citizens Club. Tony will leave the legacy of a loving and giving man, who believed that it was better to give than to receive, and who always made time to say a prayer for anyone in need whether he personally knew them or not. Tony was the beloved husband of the late Marilyn (Surprenant) Costa, with whom he raised 3 wonderful children: Anthony R. Costa, Jr. and wife Wendy, Donna M. Sawa and husband Robert, and Robert E.R. Costa and wife Mechelle. He also leaves his 8 cherished grandchildren: Melissa, Lori, Joe, Christopher, Courtney, Robert Jr., Matthew, and Jacob; 6 great-grandchildren: Ava, Luke, Logan, Parker, Bently, and Addison; his very special friend and companion of many years Jean Martins, with whom he enjoyed traveling to Clearwater Beach; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. A public walk through visitation will be held on Sunday June 28th from 2:00-4:00pm in Ludlow Funeral Home adhering to State and Local guidelines in regards to no contact, social distancing, and PPE. Due to ongoing restrictions, additional funeral services will be held privately by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tony’s memory to Our Lady of Fatima Church 438 Winsor St. Ludlow, Ma. 01056. For additional information, please visit www.ludlowfuneralhome.com.

He was so special to us when my dad was diagnosed with cancer (they both worked at Monsanto) and he and Jean came up to visit him in the hospital. He was a wonderful man and the greatest Grandpupa to our grandchildren. Prayers to his family. He will be missed
