Rogers, Barbara Townsend
Barbara Townsend Rogers, 89, longtime resident of the Eagle Bend Community in south Aurora. died on March 15, 2021. She is, and always will be greatly missed by her husband Jim (James P. Rogers), after 67 years of marriage. And by her children: Abbe Rogers (Neil) Bolich, Cynthia Rogers (Jim) Goldsmith, and Christopher Todd (Carol) Rogers; five grandchildren and two "great-grands". Each of them cherrish memories of their Mom (or "Mama") and are deeply saddened by this change in their lives.
Barbara was born in Jackson, Michigan, in 1931, but raised and educated in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Michigan in 1953, where her father (Richard Emory Townsend) was a distinguished professor of Metallurgical Engineering, and her mother (Edna Wiers Townsend) was an accomplished and respected artist. Barbara is also survived by her sisters, Nancy Townsend Reynolds and Deborah Townsend (and Nancy's wider family, all Michigan residents in or near Ann Arbor). Barbara was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Jim and Barbara were married in Ann Arbor in June, 1953.
Mrs. Rogers took great pride in teaching grammar-school art at St. Mary's School and in the Cherry Creek School District, both in south-metro Denver. To secure her teaching credentials, Barbara enrolled in the education department of Metropolitan State University, long after her undergraduate years at the UofM. She completed her Colorado State Teaching Certificate with honors in 1979. After full-time teaching, Barb served as a much-loved substitute teacher at more than 20 different elementary schools in Cherry Creek School District. Most still want her back!
While teaching elementary-school, Barbara became skilled in the art/craft of decorative colored glass-manufacture, having studied this art form with the renowned Phil Watkins. She became very proficient at unique designs in construction of glass windows, large lamps, and table-top decorations, privately marketing them in Denver and Colorado Springs. But her greatest talent was in fabric arts where she designed and exhibited many forms of quilts and fiber decorations, winning prizes at county fairs, and sharing her special skill in fabric color and contrast selection. Barbara was a member and leader of several local and quilting associations, including The Smoky Hill Quilt Club, and "SEWBEEITS", a local quilting group in the Eagle Bend community.
From her father, Barbara gained a lifetime proficiency in small-boat sailing, largely learned as a pre-teen and teen on Barton Pond, near Ann Arbor. Dick Townsend taught her well. Barbara piloted her family's Rhodes 19 sloop for more than 10 years on North Sound, Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, where the Rogers family lived for several years. This joy developed into the delights of international ocean travel. With Jim, and later with all their children, Barbara traveled to dozens of seaports and historic sites in more than 30 countries in Europe, Australia, South and North America. Love, Always and Forever.

I was saddened when I heard the news. It´s been almost a year. I am lucky and it was a honor meeting Barb. She was so sweet & kind hearted. Words cannot express how much she will be missed. I will forever treasure my memories with her. Being able to wake her up in the morning with a "good morning sunshine". She will now be the sunshine that guides me throughout my days. To her family, I am sorry for your loss.

I met Barbara at many Rotary functions and I always spent some time talking to her. She always had a smile on her face and was a great listener. I wish I had seen her quilts as I love to quilt and some of her art work.
Barbara was a great person to talk to and was always kind in her comments. I can only imagine what a wonderful teacher she was, as she was a wonderful person! I am sure she is an angel now and is in a happy place.
