I met Dale in the Navy when I delivered hometown news releases for our recruit training company to the public information office. I had joined to become a journalist but missed the deadline for the school, so I asked Dale about it. I had been a journalism major at Illinois, so he took me in to the Chief's office and introduced me--and after graduation I joined the weekly paper, The Hoist, at the Naval Recruit Training Center. Our crew all became friends, but the Navy being the Navy, we all went our separate ways. Dale was friendly and a kidder; one of those genuinely nice guys. I became a Navy journalist because he didn't dismiss me, a lowly recruit, when I came to his office. Though it's been 60+ years, I have never forgotten him and that act of generosity.
