Henry Chandler Obituary

Henry Tuttle Chandler, 91, of Lake Forest, IL died at his home on February 19, 2016, with his family by his side. Harry, as he was known, was born on February 14, 1925 in Chicago, IL to the late Kent and Grace (Tuttle) Chandler. He grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois, attending the Bell School and Gorton School, after which he went on to Groton School, Yale University and later the Harvard Business School's AMP. After commanding his naval cadet battalion at Yale, he served on a destroyer as an ensign in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He spent his 34 year professional career with the Quaker Oats Company, first in production management and then in brand and sales management. Harry's dedicated lifelong community service included work with Boy Scouts of America, The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, Nature Conservancy of Illinois, The Field Museum, Alliance for the Great Lakes, and as an Alderman for the City of Lake Forest. Harry's greatest joy was to spend time with his family on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, boating on the Great Lakes and in the Pacific Northwest, hunting ducks and upland birds, and on the ski slopes of the Rockies and the Alps. He will be greatly missed. Harry is survived by his loving wife Clarissa Haffner Chandler; children, Laura Emerson Chandler, Edward Kent (Susan) Chandler, Phoebe (Arthur) Chandler Turner; grandchildren, Grace S. Chandler, Edward M. Chandler, Thomas H. Chandler, Adele O. Watel, Charlotte G. Watel; brother Bruce (Jenny) Chandler, and many nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond. He was preceded in death by his beloved son Henry Tuttle Chandler, Jr. Memorial service 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel, 555 N. Sheridan Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, The Nature Conservancy of Illinois, or the Alliance for the Great Lakes. My parents often sailed with Chris and Harry out of Great Lakes. Harry was such a patient mentor with me on the evenings when i joined them ( when I was a young squirt.) On each adventure he'd teach me something new and make a point of including me in the conversation. He will be greatly missed.

Our dear friend and colleague, Harry, remains among the most beloved and respected leaders of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. His searing intelligence was matched only by his passion for the children and families in our region. His love of the outdoors was reflected in his strong affinity for the Y Camps, where children have life-changing experiences and where character is built. Well before and after Harry was our respected Chair of the Board of Managers, Harry was committed to ensuring that all children had access to early learning and school-based programs that provided social and emotional learning skills, so vital to life-long success and happiness. We are proud to have had Harry by our side and we will miss him so very much.

Harry was always very enjoyable to be around including the hunting of grouse, and it was my good fortune to have known him. He fit my definition of a fine man. My heartfelt sympathy to the family.

Gran, Laura, Ed, and Phoebe and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Grandad Harry was a remarkable man and the most dignified gentleman I ever met. It was an honor to be part of your family for a part of my life. Since both of my parents died in my 20's, Chris and Harry were truly my children's grandparents and all of you Chandler's accepted them with love and affection and inclusion as if they were related. To a mother that means more than anything. Grandad was always so kind to me. I have so many pictures and memories! He would call me when I got back from the transplant to see how I was doing. I enjoyed our chats and his concern. When Cholla kept running off, he put in an electric fence. Over the years he always checked on me. He would drive to Barrington to take me out to lunch! At parties he would come up to me and ask how things were going and if I needed anything. He took me on a moonlit canoe paddle at Huron Mountain and told me tales of his experiences there. Once I asked him about Chris, his love for her. He said he knew he was in love with her when they went in his convertible and her hair was blowing all over the place and her long scarf was flying behind her and she was laughing. She was so beautiful and he thought "that's the girl for me". The other girls were hanging on to their hats and all worried about their hair. I will forever respect and admire and love him.
