JAMES HOLLAND Obituary

HOLLAND--James.

James F. Holland, M.D., our beloved father and an acknowledged founder and pioneer of the field of clinical cancer care, died on March 22, 2018 at age 92 at home, surrounded by family. He was the Distinguished Professor of Neoplastic Diseases at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. His work proved that combination chemotherapy had the potential to cure cancer, for which he shared the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research in 1972. Dr. Holland was the past president of two national cancer research organizations: the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He represented the U.S. government to the Soviet Union 1972-73, studying Soviet oncology and training Soviet oncologists. Now in its ninth edition, "Holland-Frei Cancer Medicine" was the first comprehensive oncology textbook and remains a leader in the field. He married Jimmie C. Holland, M.D. in 1956, a pioneer in the field of psycho-oncology, who died December 24, 2017. Together they forged an accomplished and cherished husband-and-wife team in medicine. Among other initiatives, they nurtured AORTIC, the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer, to promote cancer control and palliation in Africa for more than 25 years. Dr. Holland's extraordinary career ranged from research and treatment of acute leukemia to breast and other cancers. His recent research focused on the viral etiology of certain breast cancers. A funeral will be held at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home in Manhattan on Sunday, March 25 at 10:30am. Contributions may be made to aortic-africa.org for cancer control in Africa or to the American Association for Cancer Research, aacr.org, whose mission is to prevent and cure cancer. We will deeply miss his boundless love for life and for us. Children Diane, Steven, Mary, Sally, Peter and David Holland.

Dr. Holland had just arrived at Mt. Sinai in NYC from Buffalo in 1972 when he took me on as one of his patients to treat me, at the age of 19, with a diagnosis of synovial sarcoma, which was removed from my right leg. He told me and my parents, she will be part of my research... I will never forget he said to my parents that if you take her anywhere else, they are going to want to amputate her leg...I want to treat her entire body. Six months of grueling chemo with a new experimental cancer drug and it worked. I have never forgotten him and his dedication to his craft, his knowledge and kind bedside manner. He cured me of this very rare cancer. I will be 65 very soon with a husband and two grown children. I've had a blessed, wonderful life. Thank you Dr. James Holland. May you rest in peace....

He was my mentor and unsurpassed influence on my life from the time I started in laboratories and clinic at the age of 14.. He taught me and many others to do all possible to try to save a life by curing the disease. His passion and articulate intellectual dissection of a difficult problem always forced us to think outside the box exploring new ways to beat the cancer. Our task has to be to keep that penetrating spirit and approach until the disease finally yields.

Sincere sympathies to the Holland family. Your father was a game-changer. Losing 2 parents in such a short period of time is very sad. I had the privilege to meet Dr. Holland once or twice - my mother worked at Mt Sinai for 15 years and she introduced me to him. I hope you take comfort knowing he extended the life of so many patients. God Bless your family.

I lived across the street from this loving family when they lived in Buffalo, New York. I have fond memories of playing at their home. I remember sitting around their dinner table and Dr. Holland plating food for us. I was 9 years old at that time and did not know I was in the prescence of such an important cancer visionary. I am sorry to hear of his passing and am amazed at all he accomplished in his life. Deepest sympathies to the Holland children, Steven, Mary, Sally, Peter, and David. As a young patient at roswell Park in 1964-65 DR. Holland was my savior. I owe my life to him and thought about him many many times through the years. I am so sorry to read of his passing and to read of his great accomplishments. He has gone on to do even greater things. Look forward to seeing him in the afterlife.

A blessed human being. His care for my wife Salud prolonged her life by many years and my daughter and me will forever be indebted to him for that lengthening time. His humanity was rare and omnipresent, in his person, in the words he choose, and in his deep concern of all who came before him seeking help. Rest well , my dearest Jim, rest well -- you enriched the world of medical science and many human hearts with life, and life, and life.

There was no one who taught me more. I viewed Dr. Holland as a mentor and teacher, but most of all a friend. Medicine has lost one of its greatest minds. My deepest sympathies.

I was In the former Division of Medical Oncology at Mount Sinai when I met Dr Holland over forty years ago when he came from Roswell Park to head up the new Department of Neoplastic Diseases. Under his leadership, it was to become a leading cancer center, forerunner of the Tisch Cancer Institute. .Many of the Fellows he trained are now known as foremost cancer specialists in the United States. He was unfailingly appreciative and gracious when I was associated with him in collaborative activities. I came to consider him a friend and remember him fondly.

Dr Holland was one of a kind. A special human being. I was lucky enough to work for him in the early days at Mt Sinai as one of the first clinical research nurses. His personality was bigger than life. You will truly be missed. My condolences to his family

As another survivor (osteosarcoma) at the hands of Dr. Holland, and a patient of his wife in the aftermath, I am deeply saddened to hear of his demise. Both he and his wife will live in in the hearts of all those whose lives they saved and improved and in the minds of those they trained. May the family be comforted.
