Larry Kimbrough Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 8, 2008.

Larry Douglas Kimbrough, beloved resident of Crooked Oak, passed on Feb. 4, 2008, by the side of his new loving wife Valerie Bowers home.

Larry is survived by his mother, Mae Jean Kimbrough, of Crooked Oak; his daughter, Liza Kimbrough (23); his sisters, Sue Jones, of San Antonio, Texas, and Judy Nix, of Phil Campbell; nephew, Brian James; nieces, Sarah Patti and Kelly Jones; two grandnephews; and his horse, Lucky.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis E. Kimbrough.

Larry graduated from Deshler High School and attended Auburn University, serving as a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He was a captain in the Army, stationed in Germany. He ran his own insurance company in Auburn, had numerous successes as a salesman, including the Million Dollar Round Table. Larry, aka, "Zolin the Wizard," served as the wizard of the Alabama Renaissance Faire and king in 2003. After years of adventures as a traveling salesman, he found his calling: caring for his parents back at home in Crooked Oak. He was a man of many talents and passions and spread great joy and love to the lives of those around him. He lived with God in his heart, the spirit of a child and with endless joy and gratitude.

A celebration of life will be Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at Crooked Oak Baptist Church on Frankford Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

One of my favourite memories is the card trick with 4 Kings that he did last for me in the home of Marsha Lippincott in Auburn in 1980. I believe the last time I saw Larry he was visiting me in Hillcrest in San Diego. His daughter Liza was with him. She did a great imitation of me. "Where's my wallet? Where's my keys?" It would be wonderful to connect with her. Can anyone help please?

As many have said before me "Life will not be the same". There is a void that can not go away. He was my big brother, always there to listen and help when he could. Whatever I did he was there to support me. I long to hear his sweet voice and see that wonderful smile. I will miss you forever.
Your loving little sister, Judy

Life will never be the same now that my dear brother is gone. We had our ups and downs, but OH how I loved him and was not ready to let him go. We had so many plans - gardens to plant, hikes, trail rides on Lucky and Thunder, improvements to the house, family reunions. I feel so cheated!

The world will be a less gentle place without Larry in it. He was like an older brother to me rather than a cousin. The spot that he has occupied in my heart all my life feels so empty. He was truly one of a kind, never, ever to be duplicted.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of those grieving his absence.
