Marian Mowatt Obituary

Marian H. Mowatt

Marian Bellamy Hubbell Mowatt, 102, passed away July 9, 2016 in Lacey, Washington. She was born July 23, 1913 to George and Elsie (Peirce) Hubbell in Verona, New Jersey, where she also grew up. She graduated from Swarthmore College and earned a PhD in Psychology from Bryn Mawr College. Her first job was teaching at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

She married Allan Mowatt, an electrical engineer, in 1939. His Westinghouse job brought the couple to Pittsburgh, where Marian taught at Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie Mellon University. Later they moved to the Boston area. They adopted a boy and a girl.

After a brief move to Sandwich, New Hampshire, Marian taught at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. In 1960, she moved with the children, Allan and Janna to Seattle, where she worked at Community Psychiatric Clinic. Later she opened her office for the practice of clinical psychology, and taught part-time at the University of Washington. An interesting part of her practice was screening candidates for the Seattle Police Department.

Marian traveled to conferences and seminars in the United States, Russia, Greece, France, Japan, Canada and the Bahamas. She wrote a book titled Divorce Counseling and co-authored A History of the Washington State Psychological Association.

She enjoyed hiking, the theater, play reading, traveling and the current issues group at University House. She belonged to the University Unitarian Church, the ACLU and Gray Panthers.

Son, Allan, lives at Moses Lake and daughter, Janna, lives in Olympia. The three grandchildren, step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great nieces live in the Puget Sound area.

Services will be held at the University Unitarian Church 6556 35th Ave. NE, Seattle,

at 1:00 p.m. on August 23, 2016.
