With passage of time, the legacy of Robert Moellering is a bit more clear to some of us who are inspired by him. His scholarly, clinical, and administrative accomplishments are well known. We remember him as a man with access to power who never lost his moral compass.

I was Dr. Moellering's chief medical resident in 1983-1984. I postponed my fellowship to stay one more year with a mentor I knew I'd never see the likes of again. As much as I learned greater depths of medicine from him, I value even more the humility, respectfulness, and ability to inspire that he taught by example. And I was right all those years ago...I have not encountered his equal in the ensuing 30 years of practice, teaching, and research,

Dear Dr. Moellering,

Though it has been more than a decade, I remember you as if it were yesterday. An outstanding physician, a dedicated leader, a wonderful teacher. But most of all, I remember your caring and warmth, your kindness, your integrity, your humor, smile and laughter, and how you were loved and admired by so many. Thank you for all that you have done. Peace be with you and may God be with you and your family always.

Dr Moellering was a legend in our discipline. And this was combined with a character of rare kindness, a true gentleman. He will be greatly missed by all of us who had the privilege of meeting him and work under his guidance. To his family I express my deepest condolences.

Dr Moellering was a star not just because of his brilliance and warmth, but in his ability to transfer parts of that to his residents. We saw him as the ultimate role model; incredibly smart but also still a nice guy. To whatever extent the thousands of physicians that he trained have been able to copy Dr Moellering, the world is now a much better place. His legacy will live on.

My deepest sympathy for you and your family.

Dear Mary Jane,
It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Dr. Moellering. I considered him a giant in the world of ID and it was my great privilege to work with him as he chaired our linezolid advisory group. His guidance and advice was instrumental in the development of this and many other antimicrobial agents. In addition, he was a wonderful person. He will be truly missed by all. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss.

I was sad to learn of Dr. Moellering's passing. It was an honor to train under him at New England Deaconess as a resident. He was a brilliant physician. He was a great teacher and mentor to the housestaff. But to me, his humbleness and dedication to others is what made him a good and decent person.

Dr. Moellering was a gentleman and a scholar- so gifted. As brilliant as he was, there wasn't a pretentious bone in his body. Gentle, kind, and unassuming. It was a privilege to train briefly at the Deaconess under his tenure. My deepest sympathy to his family.

An incredible teacher, warm and kind human being and real life hero. I remember in awe morning report when we would try and stump you only to have you stump us with your mile long differential. The housestaff party at your family home was always so fun. Deepest sympathies to your family, colleagues, BIDMC and students.

What a gentleman! His connection to the Housestaff was just wonderful to watch and have them be in awe of him, not only for his expertise but his caring about each one of them. It certainly was a privilege to have worked with him.

Bob instilled in his students an obligation for both intellectual rigor and compassion in caring for patients. I think of his lessons frequently even twenty years later. I hope his loved ones are doing ok during this difficult time.

Bob stood at the head of our exceptional HMS class in so many ways. His warmth, kindness, shy smile, athletic ability and competitiveness, brilliance, wide ranging fund of knowledge and of interests. He knew how to be a friend to many while losing nothing of his strong inner core of precious values. His beloved wife and three children were so blessed to have him in their lives.

May his memory be, to us all, for a blessing.
