Robert Eddy Obituary

Col. Robert S. Eddy III passed away peacefully on May 14, 2020 at the age of 96. He was born in Chicago, IL on October 21, 1923 and was a longtime resident of the Greater New Orleans area. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert S. Eddy Jr. and Adele Vaughn Eddy. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Bennett Eddy, his stepsons, Jason and Brian Bennett, and his grandchildren, Evelyn, Natalie, Kellan, and Zoey Bennett. Col. Eddy was a proud veteran of WWII, serving in the Army, Army OSS, and the Merchant Marines. He received his law degree from Cumberland University and went on to retire from the NOPD as Chief of the Auxiliary in 1972 and International Lubricant (Shell Oil Co.) in 1992. He had many hobbies and interests, which he pursued enthusiastically. In his long life, Col. Eddy served on the board of the Confederate and Military Museum, was a member of Bayou Gun Club, Crescent Coin Club, the NRA, and the Mardi Gras Favor Collectors Club. He was an avid collector of World's Fair and sports memorabilia, cameras, and stamps, among many other things too numerous to count. Col. Eddy will be remembered as ""a man of great mysteries"" who was loved by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on June 13, 2020 from 2PM-5PM at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 3310 Florida Ave. Kenner, LA. An online guestbook is available at www.LeitzEaganFuneralHome.com

Bob was an amazing man who lived a long and fascinating life. He protected our country during World War 2, he protected New Orleans as a police officer, and served in Shell Oil. I met Bob in 1996 when I joined the Crescent City Coin Club (of which Bob served 10 terms as club president). Bob was the Show (or Bourse) Chairman for years and it was amazing how much he could pack into his personally customized van. I deeply respected Bob and enjoyed his personal recount of history, which he had lived so much. He was a strong leader and his decisions were iron-clad. Bob Eddy was a giant among men and he will be missed.

I worked for several years with Bob at ILC in the Maint. Dept and truly liked our ability to work together on special projects and the friendship we had. He was also a good friend of our family for many years. My Father and I both worked at ILC and we both enjoyed our friendship with Bob during the many years we worked together. It saddens me that bob is no longer here but I do have many memories that I cherish.
