Thomas J. Fallon, 84, of Scotch Plains died peacefully at his residence on Dec. 27, 2010. The funeral is Friday, Dec. 31, at 9 a.m. at the Rossi Funeral Home, 1937 Westfield Ave., Scotch Plains. Funeral Mass is at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church, Scotch Plains. Interment is in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Visitation will be on Thursday at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Letters of condolence may be left at therossifuneralhome.com Thomas was born in Jersey City, N.J. He graduated from Newark College of Engineering with a B.S. in engineering, from St. Peter's College with a B.S. in chemistry, and Fordham University with a master's degree in chemistry. Tom worked for Public Service and National Gypsum before starting a 35-year career with Esso/Exxon. He worked at the Bayonne Refinery in their Experimental Lab and was in charge of their asphalt plant before joining the Exxon Research & Engineering Division. Tom served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II, in the Pacific, from Guam and Saipan to Iwo Jima, where he was highly decorated, receiving the Silver Star, a Field Commission and a Purple Heart. When stateside he was involved in quelling the dock union riots in San Francisco, and preventing prisoners escaping after a breakout at Alcatraz. Tom was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps at Great Lakes Naval Station. Tom was active in his community and served on the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education. He was also involved with Jr. Raider football and baseball, and scouting. Since his retirement in 1986 he has enjoyed activities with the SPF YMCA. Surviving are his beloved wife of 58 years, Ann (nee O'Hare), whom he meet at Fordham University as her laboratory instructor; his loving sons, Drs. Mark, Robert, Thomas, and Richard; daughter, Nadine, and eight caring grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 325, Scotch Plains, N.J. 07076.

My grandfather was one of the best men that I'll ever have the chance to know. He was a man of a different generation, one of hard work and dedication, one that I doubt we will ever have the chance to see again. He believed in everything I did and I hope that one day, although I may not have gained his wonderful head for chemistry, I make him proud.
I'll miss you gramps.
