Tim Miles Obituary

Tim Richard Miles

Tim Richard

Miles passed away Saturday, March 27, 2021.

Born Thursday, March 31, 1938, Tim was the son of Alfred and Lucy Miles. From an early age, he loved getting into trouble with his older brother, Ed, on the family farm in Nashville. He later combined his engineering degree from Vanderbilt University with a law degree from George Washington University to become an acclaimed-and sometimes feared-patent examiner for the US Patent and Trademark Office.

In 1965 he met Patricia Herr of Front Royal, VA, and married her within months. They raised their two children in Alexandria, VA, and after his retirement in 1998, the couple followed their grown daughter to Albuquerque, NM. After Pat's death in 2007, he found love again with Sharyn Bills, whom he married in 2009. A few of his favorite pastimes were watching the birds that he fed in the backyard, bowling turkeys, and traveling to reunions with his buddies from his time serving in the Army .

Tim was perhaps best known in New Mexico for his myriad hats and his trusty LL Bean bag. The tote bag was particularly handy in his favorite restaurants-the Santa Fe Bite, The Range, Flying Star, and Pars to name just a few. He had a contingency plan for every potential challenge while eating. Too chilly? Sweater vest, flannel shirt, and a light jacket were always at the ready. Other contents included extra salt and pepper shakers, a silver bowl of raw sugar (it tastes better), sturdy oversized napkins, a back pillow since chairs never have enough back support, a flashlight in the event of a power outage, a backup flashlight to find the original flashlight, and a serrated tomato knife to cut his prized Campari tomatoes, which he would often share with staff.

Tim is survived by his wife, Sharyn Bills Miles; children, Brian Miles and Laura Miles Bexfield; son-in-law, David Bexfield; stepdaughter, Eve Bills Lacivita and her husband Jamie Lacivita; and brother Ed's wife, Joyce.

At Tim's request, no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, he would prefer you support our local restaurants. Don't forget your tote bag!
