Alta ("Jan") Blanchard Allison, 92, born in Newport, VT died October 3, 2018 of congestive heart failure. She was living with her daughter and family in Olney, MD for the past year and a half. Prior to that time she was a long time resident of CT. Jan was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, George Allison (Cdr., USN Ret.), her parents and five sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Lauren Allison-Fisher and husband Stephen, Cynthia Miezis and husband Ron, her cherished grandchildren Sasha and Grant Miezis, beloved brother Alden Blanchard, sister-in-law Mary Hulbert, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jan was born in Newport, VT on April 4, 1926 to Clarence and Annie Blanchard. She belonged to a large and loving family of 5 sisters and one brother, which brought her a lifetime of joy. After graduating from Newport High School, Jan left VT for NYC, then Washington DC, while working for TWA. She later moved to Pensacola FL where she worked for the US Navy. During that time, she met and married her husband George Allison of Carlisle PA, a Naval pilot and instructor. Throughout her husband's Naval career, she and George travelled extensively in the US and Europe, living in RI, FL, CA, Wash. DC, VA, England and CT, where they retired. A number of years were spent in the VA/D.C. area, supporting her family and George's career as Flight Deck Officer on the USS Intrepid, then at the Pentagon and State Dept. Jan was truly a caring person with great listening skills. She enjoyed travel and the opportunity it provided her to get to know others, and share in their lives and culture. In later years, she and George enjoyed hosting guests from overseas in their home.
Jan was a loving and supportive mother to her two daughters - family meant the world to her. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed hosting countless family gatherings. She was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vernon, CT for over 40 years, where she consistently contributed to running the annual Christmas bazaar. A voracious reader, she kept up on current events, was always interested in learning new things, and was a dedicated volunteer at the South Windsor, CT library for many years. She loved history and antiquing and was a proud member of the DAR. She dearly loved her home state of VT, returning every summer to her cottage on the lake.
A celebration of Jan's life will be held on Saturday, October 13 at Curtis Britch Funeral Home, 37 Lake Road, Newport, VT. Calling hours are 12:00, with the service at 1:00 and interment at Pine Grove Cemetery following the service. All are invited to the East Side Restaurant afterwards for a reception. Jan was my second, beloved mother and the dearest, brightest soul to me and my family. She and George "adopted" me and my family when my own dear parents passed away in 1994. I've had the great good fortune of having Jan in my life since I was 8 years old, with Lauren and Cynthia being my "sisters" all throughout my life. Our parents were best friends, too. I cannot imagine any family on earth being as close, loving, fun, and inclusive as this family. My children (now grown) will always love Jan and George as grandparents because they were so loving and thoughtful toward them. What a true blessing to be a part of this amazing family! We miss both Jan and George immensely, and their legacy of kindheartedness will live in our hearts.

Capt. Noah Grant Chapter, NSDAR extends its sympathy. Jan was an enthusiastic member and sometimes brought husband George to our meetings. We miss them both. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
